Phantom Blade Zero has been one of those games we see for two minutes a year, always looking spectacular, always just out of reach. That changes next week. Sony has announced a dedicated State of Play for S-GAME's dark wuxia action game, airing Monday, August 17 at 7:00pm PT / 10:00pm ET (3:00am BST on August 18), with nearly 20 minutes of brand new gameplay on PlayStation's YouTube and Twitch channels.

The show was announced alongside something more concrete: pre-orders are open right now for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, ahead of the October 29 launch. An 11 minute pre-order trailer dropped the same day, which is already more sustained footage than the game has shown in most of its marketing to date.

Why a whole State of Play for one game matters

Sony reserves solo State of Play episodes for games it considers heavy hitters, and Phantom Blade Zero slotting into that lineup says a lot about how the platform sees its fall. The game is a console exclusive on PS5, and it lands October 29, right in the middle of a stacked stretch that also includes Marvel's Wolverine on September 15 and a certain open world crime game in November. Twenty minutes of gameplay is the kind of airtime usually spent convincing people a game is real, and after years of jaw dropping but brief combat clips, that is exactly what Phantom Blade Zero needs.

There is substance behind the style, too. S-GAME has built the combat around authentic martial arts choreography, with film star Donnie Yen on board as creative consultant and performing motion capture for the character Mo Yuan. The studio describes the game as dark wuxia rather than a soulslike, promising faster, more cinematic fights than the punishing pace of genre neighbors like Nioh 3. One quirky footnote from the announcement: Sony warns that the broadcast contains licensed music that may get co-streams and VOD archives flagged, so creators planning watch parties should take note.

Editions, prices and what pre-ordering gets you

The Standard Edition runs $59.99, a welcome sight in a year where $69.99 has become the default for big releases and some publishers are pushing beyond it. The Deluxe Edition costs $69.99 and adds two exclusive outfits, Wulin Legend and Blood-Steel Form, plus a digital art book and soundtrack. Pre-ordering either version unlocks the Treasure Basin accessory and the Legacy outfit early, and S-GAME confirmed both items can also be earned through normal in-game progression, which is the honest way to do pre-order bonuses.

Our take: this is the right move at the right time. Phantom Blade Zero has generated enormous goodwill on trailers alone, but trailers do not answer questions about mission structure, enemy variety or how it actually feels to play for more than ninety seconds. A 20 minute deep dive either cements this as one of the year's most exciting action games or shows us the seams. Either way, we will finally know, and with launch just eleven weeks out, it is about time.
