Fortnite's Override Season Launches Tomorrow, and Sonic Headlines a Battle Pass Stacked With Gaming Legends

Four days ago we covered the Override reveal and carefully labeled the gaming crossover theme as rumor, because Epic had only shown a pixelated logo and a tagline. We can retire the caution. The official Chapter 7 Season 4 trailer is out on Fortnite's YouTube channel, the Battle Pass highlights followed a day later, and the leakers can take a bow: Override is a full-blown celebration of gaming icons, and it launches tomorrow, Thursday, August 20, once Season 3 closes out today.

Sonic is the Battle Pass headliner, and you get him instantly

The Override Battle Pass carries eight skins: Bastian, Grace Crowne, K1TTYW1NS, Wrixel, Mali, Phantom, Geno and Sonic. Most of them are original Fortnite designs riffing on classic gaming genres, from fighters to racers, but the blue hedgehog is the obvious star. Buy the pass and Sonic unlocks immediately, no level grinding required, which is a friendlier setup than the deep-tier placement early reports suggested.

The Sonic package goes well beyond a single skin. The trailer also flashes a Green Hill Zone location on the island itself, checkered soil and all, so the map is getting in on the tribute too. Geno, one of the original pass skins, appears alongside Dr. Eggman in the story setup, which hints the season narrative leans into the crossover rather than treating it as set dressing.

The Item Shop roster reads like a gaming hall of fame

The pass is only the opening act. The full trailer confirms more than twenty collaborations rolling out through the Item Shop across the season, and the list is genuinely absurd: Shadow and Dr. Eggman from the Sonic side, Sora from Kingdom Hearts with a Keyblade pickaxe, Joker and Morgana from Persona 5, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Street Fighter, The Witcher and Tomb Raider all make appearances. The Kingdom Hearts inclusion is the quiet headline for a lot of fans, since that particular crossover has been rumored for years without ever materializing.

Epic is staggering the releases rather than dumping everything at once, with pricing and bundles announced closer to each drop. Our take: that is the right call for the wallet-conscious, and honestly the smart play is to pick your one or two must-have icons now and budget for them, because this season is engineered to test the restraint of anyone who grew up with a controller in hand. After a summer that gave us a Batman-soaked July, Epic is closing August with its most nostalgia-heavy season in years, and the timing right before Gamescom week feels anything but accidental.
