We finally have a date. God of War Laufey, the first mainline entry in the series that does not put Kratos front and center, launches on February 16, 2027, exclusively on PlayStation 5. Santa Monica Studio confirmed the date during its panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday evening, alongside a short new teaser for the game.

And the studio was not done. Head of creative Cory Barlog capped the panel by confirming that another God of War is already in development, that it will star Kratos, and that it will connect directly to the events of Laufey. Two announcements in one hour is a good night for anyone who has been following this series since the Norse saga wrapped.

What Laufey actually is

If you missed the reveal at June's State of Play, here is the short version. Laufey follows Faye, the Giant warrior who was Kratos's wife and Atreus's mother in the 2018 game, where she had already died before the story began. This game picks up shortly after that death, as Faye wakes in the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods compete for control. The new Comic-Con teaser leans into that premise, showing Faye squaring off against war deities drawn from mythologies well beyond the Norse realms.

The June showing included more than twenty minutes of gameplay, and the shift in feel from Kratos is obvious. Faye fights with Jotunn magic and a faster, more aerial style than the heavy axe-and-blades rhythm the series is known for. The Comic-Con panel brought out game director Ariel Lawrence and cast members including Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Faye, and Chris Judge, returning as Kratos. A disc version is confirmed alongside the digital release, which is worth noting in an era when physical editions are no longer a given. Pre-order details and pricing were not part of the announcement, so expect those closer to launch.

Kratos will be back

The bigger long-term news might be Barlog's closing reveal. The next God of War game will put Kratos back in the lead role and follow on directly from what happens in Laufey, with Barlog describing the new game as "a continuation of what came before." There is no release window for that project, and given that Laufey itself is still seven months away, we would not expect one for a long while.

Our honest read: February 16, 2027 is further out than many fans hoped after the June reveal, but a firm date beats a vague window, and the Kratos confirmation is a smart move. It tells anyone hesitant about a God of War without Kratos that Laufey is not a spin-off dead end, it is the bridge to his next chapter. If Santa Monica Studio sticks the landing on both, this series has its roadmap set for years.
