Nioh 3's First Expansion Hell Rising Hits August 19, Weeks Ahead of Its Promised Window

Team Ninja does not usually beat its own deadlines, so this one is worth noting. Hell Rising, the first of two planned expansions for Nioh 3, arrives on August 19 on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. The season pass originally hedged with a vague "by the end of September" window, and the finished thing is landing a good month ahead of that.

We got our first proper look at it through the official trailer Koei Tecmo published this week, and it is a meaner, stranger slice of the game than the base campaign's opening hours suggested.

A ruined future Edo, a one-eyed swordsman and shields at last

The setup pushes Takechiyo forward in time to Edo in 1651, during the Keian era, roughly thirty years after the base game begins. The peaceful castle town is gone. Following the death of the future shogun, the city has been retaken by the Crucible and turned into a war-torn open field crawling with yokai, rebels and foreign alchemists, with a fresh conspiracy building around the Spirit Stones. Two new allies anchor the story: Yagyu Jubei, the one-eyed swordsman who dominates the trailer, and Rodrigo, a Spanish envoy who clearly knows more than he lets on.

The headline mechanical addition is the Hoko and Shield, a short spear paired with an actual shield, in separate Samurai and Ninja variants. Nioh has always been a series about aggression, so handing players a proper defensive tool is a genuine experiment rather than a stat reskin. Around it sit new Guardian Spirits, skills, Martial Arts, Ninjutsu, Onmyo Magic and Graces, plus a difficulty tier called Enlightened One's Journey that sits above the current ceiling. The most interesting extra might be the Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls, a customizable challenge mode built for repeatable endgame runs, which is exactly the kind of thing this community sinks hundreds of hours into.

Pricing, and what comes after

Hell Rising ships as part of the Season Pass, which also covers the second expansion, Bloody Insurrection, due by the end of February 2027, along with a Chijiko Netsuke Charm accessory bonus. The Digital Deluxe Edition of Nioh 3 includes the same content, and Koei Tecmo has said the DLC will also be sold separately later on. One caveat from the store page is worth flagging: some of the expansion content may require finishing the main story first, so if you shelved Nioh 3 mid-campaign, you have about two and a half weeks to see the credits.

Our honest read: this looks like Team Ninja on comfortable ground. The studio has a long record of first-rate post-launch support, Nioh 2's DLC trilogy being some of the best content in the series, and shipping early rather than late is a small but telling signal. If the shield weapons hold up, August 19 should be an easy day one for anyone still in the Depths.
