Some games feel like they were made for a console that did not exist yet, and It Takes Two is one of them. A two-player-only adventure about a couple turned into dolls by their daughter's wish, it spent years being the answer to "what should we play together?" everywhere except a Nintendo handheld that could really carry it. As of October 15, the Switch 2 has its own version, and it is a fairly generous release.

EA and Hazelight Studios put the new edition at $39.99 in the US, with the work on the Switch 2 version handled alongside Turn Me Up Games. The headline for existing players is simple: if you own It Takes Two on the original Switch, you upgrade for free, as long as you sign in with the same Nintendo Account. Release was October 15 in most regions and October 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. Pricing for the UK and Europe had not been announced when we checked.

What actually changes on Switch 2

The official line is "higher resolution, improved frame rates and richer visual effects" compared with the Switch 1 version. We want to be careful here, because EA has not published a resolution or frame rate target that we could confirm on an official page, and some write-ups quote exact numbers without a source. Until a proper technical breakdown appears, treat the upgrade as a clear step up from the original Switch release, not as a guaranteed match for the PlayStation or Xbox versions.

What matters more for most people is the connective tissue. Cross-play works between Switch 2, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, so your partner's platform no longer decides where you play. The Friend's Pass also carries over: one person owns the game, the other downloads a free client and plays the full campaign. Switch players on the original model can also use GameShare, which EA lists as supported.

For context, the game has been out since 2021 and picked up more than 90 awards, including Game of the Year honors at The Game Awards and the DICE Awards. That is why the price matters: $39.99 for a critically acclaimed co-op campaign is a reasonable deal for a console that is still building its library.

Who should upgrade, buy, or skip

If you own it on Switch 1, this is a free download and an easy yes. Switch 2 owners who never played it should buy it only if they have a regular co-op partner, because the game has no single-player mode at all. If your partner owns it elsewhere, use the Friend's Pass first and spend nothing.

Anyone who already owns it on another platform gets no discount for crossing over. That is normal for ports, and we would not buy it twice unless the handheld, couch-passing format is the whole point for you.

Our take: this is a good Switch 2 port decision by EA, mostly because of the free upgrade and the Friend's Pass. It follows the pattern we have seen with other recent Switch 2 releases, including the Dragon Quest XI S port at $39.99 and the Elden Ring Switch 2 edition. The open question is performance, and we will update this story if EA or Hazelight publish firm numbers.

FAQ

Is the It Takes Two Switch 2 upgrade really free?

Yes, if you already own the game on the original Nintendo Switch. EA says the upgrade is free, and you need to use the same Nintendo Account that holds your Switch copy. If you do not own it on Switch yet, the Switch 2 version costs $39.99 in the US.

Can Switch 2 players play with friends on PlayStation, Xbox and PC?

Yes. EA lists cross-play between Switch 2, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Both players still need an internet connection, and one of you needs to own the game or use a Friend's Pass.

Does the Friend's Pass work on Switch 2?

It does. One player buys the full game and the second player downloads the free Friend's Pass client to join the whole co-op campaign. That second player does not need to own anything.

Is it worth buying again if I own it on PlayStation, Xbox or PC?

Only if you want to play on the Switch 2 itself. There is no cross-buy between platforms, so you would pay the full $39.99. If your couch partner already has a console that runs the game, the Friend's Pass probably saves you the money.
