LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Is Out Today on Switch 2 at $69.99, and the Joker and Harley Quinn Mayhem Collection Lands on Every Platform

Switch 2 owners finally get their turn in Gotham. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is out today on Nintendo's console, roughly four months after it launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in May. It is the same TT Games open world, priced at $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $89.99 for the Deluxe Edition on the eShop, with a 23.7 GB download and two player local co-op.

Today matters for everyone who already owns the game elsewhere too. The Mayhem Collection, the DLC that puts you in the shoes of the Joker and Harley Quinn, releases on every platform at once, and a free update adds a new Absolute difficulty above the existing Dark Knight setting. If you pre-ordered the Switch 2 version in either edition, the Dark Knight Returns Batsuit is waiting at launch.

What the Switch 2 version includes

The base game follows Bruce Wayne from his training with the League of Shadows to his years as Gotham's protector, across an open city split into four islands. Batman is joined by six playable allies, Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman and Talia al Ghul, against a villain roster that runs from the Joker and the Penguin to Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and Bane. Warner Bros. Games counts 100 suits, more than 20 vehicles including the Tumbler, and over 250 props for the Batcave hub that grows as the story progresses.

The Deluxe Edition is where the value question sits. The extra $20 buys the Legacy Collection, meaning the Arkham Trilogy Pack, the Batman Beyond Pack and the Party Music Pack, plus the Mayhem Collection that launches today. If you buy Standard and change your mind, the Deluxe Edition upgrade is listed at $24.99, so committing up front saves a little. Deluxe pre-orders on Switch 2 also got a three day head start this week, the same perk the other platforms had in May.

The Mayhem Collection turns you loose on Gotham

This is the part we are most curious about, because TT Games has rarely given the villains this much room. The Joker and Harley are fully playable with their own gadgets and takedowns, and design director Jimmy Sedota describes them as leaning much harder on ranged combat than Batman's crew. They can also summon a customizable gang of trained Arkham inmates to fight alongside them.

The new story mission tells Harley's origin, from Dr. Harleen Quinzel to the escape from Arkham Asylum, and ends with the pair setting up a hideout beneath the Amusement Mile Funhouse. From there, Mayhem Mode opens up: timed, repeatable runs across a locked down North Island where you rob shops, smash ATMs, spray graffiti, steal vehicles and fight A.R.G.U.S. agents and Task Force X, with Deathstroke, Killer Croc, Deadshot and King Shark among the squad hunting you. The studs you earn buy permanent upgrades for the hideout. There are 30 new outfits for the two villains, seven Joker inspired suits for the heroes including the Bat Who Laughs, and the cutscenes run in 4:3 as a nod to Batman: The Animated Series, with a shop named Sorkin's Gems honoring Arleen Sorkin, Harley's original voice. Batman has had a busy year in games, right down to a beach Batmobile in Fortnite this summer, but a proper villain campaign in a LEGO game is a rarer treat.

Our take

The Switch 2 port is the headline for Nintendo players, and at $69.99 it matches the other platforms rather than undercutting them, so the pitch is portability, not price. The Mayhem Collection is the more interesting release for everyone else: a real villain mode with its own progression rather than a costume pack, plus a free difficulty tier for anyone who found Dark Knight mode too comfortable. We would still like to see how a four island open world holds up in handheld mode before picking it over a PS5 or PC copy, but on paper this is the most complete way to buy the game today.
