Wild Blue Skies Brings Back the Star Fox 64 Formula on August 13, and an Original Star Fox Programmer Is Behind It
If you grew up steering an Arwing through Sector Y, next week is going to feel familiar in the best way. Wild Blue Skies, an anime style rail shooter that wears its Star Fox 64 inspiration proudly, launches on August 13 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam for $14.99. And this week the developers confirmed the game is coming to Nintendo Switch too, in autumn 2026 at the same price.
What makes this one more than just another nostalgia pitch is the name behind it. The game comes from Chuhai Labs and VITEI BACKROOM, with Balor Games publishing, and Chuhai Labs was founded by Giles Goddard, one of the programmers who built the original Star Fox on the SNES. So when the store page promises "a modern take on the classic on-rails adventures of the '90s," it is a claim coming from someone who helped invent those adventures in the first place.

Talking animals, branching routes, score chasing
The setup is pure comfort food. You play Bowie Stray, a dog pilot leading a squad called the Blue Bombers through oceans, deserts and caves to stop a villain named Grimclaw. Your squadmates chatter over the radio mid mission, the visuals go for a hand crafted anime look, and the whole thing is built around the loop that made the genre great: fly the route, blast everything, protect your wingmates, chase a better score.
The structure borrows the smartest idea from Star Fox 64 as well. Missions have branching paths, so a single run does not show you everything, and repeat playthroughs open up different routes. There is a score system that rewards mastery rather than just completion, which is exactly what this genre needs to stay interesting past the credits. If you want to try before you buy, a free demo is live on Steam right now, and the game is already Steam Deck Verified.
Our take
Rail shooters have been starved for decades, and the few revivals we get rarely come with this kind of pedigree at this kind of price. Fifteen dollars is an easy ask for a genre where a tight three hour campaign you replay ten times is the whole point. The demo being free means there is no reason to guess whether the handling feels right, so give it a run this weekend. Our only caution is the usual one for arcade throwbacks: if branching routes and score attack loops do not hook you, the runtime may feel short. For everyone who has been waiting since the Nintendo 64 era for someone to do a barrel roll properly again, August 13 is circled.
