Twenty five years is a long time to wait for a remaster, and Dynasty Warriors 3 finally gets one today. Koei Tecmo and Omega Force have released Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam. It is the first time the series has ever been remastered, and the game it picked is the one most of us think of when we hear the words "one versus a thousand".

The standard edition costs $39.99 on Steam in the US. A Digital Deluxe Edition sits at $69.99. The game was originally dated March 19, 2026, then pushed to October 1, so today's release is the delayed one, not an early surprise.

What the Complete Edition actually contains

The "Complete" part is literal. You get the original Dynasty Warriors 3 and the full Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends expansion in one package, with a roster of more than 40 officers. Lu Bu, Zhao Yun and the rest of the classic cast are all here, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 along with the battlefields. Koei Tecmo also added Ziluan, the protagonist of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, as a playable officer, which is the one genuinely new face on the roster.

The modes are the ones you remember. Musou Mode, Free Mode and VS Mode all return, and two player offline split-screen co-op works across all three. True Musou Attacks are back as well. On top of the original content, there are new story scenarios built around conditional officer unlocks, so some characters only join after you clear specific challenges rather than being handed to you at the start.

For anyone who wants the original feel rather than the modern tuning, there is a toggle between Classic Settings and Normal Settings. Koei Tecmo has not spelled out every difference between the two, but the intent is clear: play it the way it was in 2001, or play it with the new systems switched on.

The new combat systems, and the Deluxe extras

Three mechanics are new to this version. Evasion lets you dodge, and a well timed Just Evasion opens a counterattack. Perfect Power Guard is a deflection system for blocking at the right moment. Weapon Fusion lets you transfer elemental attributes between weapons, which should make the weapon grind matter more than it did in the original. None of this turns Dynasty Warriors 3 into a different game, but for a title whose combat was famously simple, even a dodge is a meaningful change.

The Digital Deluxe Edition adds 42 weapons, 42 retro costumes, three stat items called the Six Secret Teachings, Wind Scroll and Tiger Amulet, and an officer concept art collection with developer commentary. That is $30 over the base price for cosmetics and a head start, so we would only recommend it if the retro costumes are the draw. A pre-order bonus, the Retro-Style Red Hare Saddle, was limited to pre-orders placed before September 30, so it is no longer available to new buyers.

If you are not sure, the Steam page has a free demo covering the Battle of Hulao Gate with six selectable officers. The PC version lists HDR and ultrawide support, Steam Cloud saves and achievements. At the time we checked, Steam user reviews stood at Very Positive from a few hundred reviews, which is early but encouraging.

Our take

Koei Tecmo has had a busy year, between this and the Nioh 3 expansion that landed in August, and this is the release we are most curious about. Remasters of 2001 games usually either stay too faithful to be fun now or change so much that the original is gone. Bundling Xtreme Legends, keeping split-screen co-op and adding a Classic toggle suggests Omega Force understood the assignment. At $39.99 it is priced like a remaster rather than a new game, and the demo means nobody has to guess. We would try the demo first, then decide whether the base game or the Deluxe fits.
