Plenty of expansions get a months-long countdown. This one just appeared. Gearbox released Risk of Rain 2: Hallowed Concepts on October 8, 2026, as a surprise launch during the Triple-I Initiative showcase period, and it is the fourth paid expansion for the co-op roguelike.

The official Steam page puts it at $14.99, and it requires the base game. It follows Survivors of the Void, Seekers of the Storm and Alloyed Collective, so the series now has a long tail of paid content. As of this writing, about 80 percent of the 862 user reviews on the Steam page are positive, which is a decent early sign but a small sample for a launch week.

What is actually in the box

The headline additions are two survivors. Acolyte is a close-range glaive fighter built around trading health for power, with a soul-bargaining twist. Enforcer is a returning name from the original Risk of Rain, a shield-focused character built around defense. Having one aggressive, risky pick and one defensive pick is a sensible spread, because the two ask for very different play and different teammates in co-op.

Beyond characters, you get three new stages: the returning Damp Caverns, the Tenebrous Quagmire and The Lurid Basilica. There are also new enemies, bosses, items and music, plus a mode called Trials of N'kuhana, which are timed challenges with their own objectives. The official pitch is a deeper trip into the cult-like world of N'Kuhana on Petrichor V, so expect a darker tone than earlier packs.

We want to be straight about what we have not verified. The store page does not give a full item list or balance numbers, and we have not played it, so we cannot say how Acolyte or Enforcer rank against the existing roster. Treat any early tier claim as a guess until more players have logged hours.

What it means for you

If you already own Risk of Rain 2, the decision is simple arithmetic. Fifteen dollars for two characters and three stages is a fair ask for a game you already enjoy, and the trials add a reason to return even if you have cleared the main loop many times. If you mostly play with a regular group, one purchase per person is the practical cost, since expansion content generally needs to be owned by each player who wants to use it.

If you do not own the game yet, the bundle that includes the base game and all four expansions is the cleaner path, because Steam sells it as a single package. Compare its price with the sum of the parts in your own region, and consider waiting for a sale rather than paying full price for everything.

Our take: a surprise drop is a good habit for a game with an established community, because players get to play first and speculate later. The risk is that a shadow-drop leaves little room for the community to compare notes before spending money. Our advice is to wait a few days for patch notes and player feedback if you are on the fence, and buy right away only if Enforcer or the new stages are exactly what your group has been missing. For a roguelike with this much replay value, a small wait costs you nothing.

FAQ

How much is Risk of Rain 2: Hallowed Concepts?

The Steam page lists the expansion at $14.99 in the US. Prices vary by region and platform, so check the store you use. It is also sold inside a bundle with the base game and the earlier expansions.

Do I need the base game to play Hallowed Concepts?

Yes. The Steam page states that the content requires the base game, Risk of Rain 2. The expansion does not work on its own.

What does Hallowed Concepts add?

It adds two playable survivors, Acolyte and Enforcer, three new stages (Damp Caverns, Tenebrous Quagmire and The Lurid Basilica), a set of timed challenges called Trials of N'kuhana, and new enemies, bosses, items and music.

Steam lists Windows, and reports around the launch say the expansion also reached the console versions of the game. Because console listings and prices can differ, confirm availability in your own console store before buying.
