Castle builders have waited a long time for a proper new Stronghold, and the wait now has a date. Firefly Studios has set Stronghold 4 to enter Steam Early Access on December 7, 2026, which means the game will be playable this winter but not in its finished form.

The announcement came during this week's Triple-I Initiative showcase, alongside a new trailer focused on castle customization and the economy. The studio is pitching the game as a return to the "green roots" of the series, and the story is a prequel to the original, set in medieval England and following a character named Penryn. The cast includes Ben Starr and Samantha Beart.

What you get on December 7

The Early Access build is not a stripped-down tech test. According to the Steam page and the developer, launch includes a 22-mission story campaign, a skirmish trail, a free build sandbox and custom skirmish matches against up to eight computer opponents. For a series that has always been strongest in single player, that is a reasonable amount to chew on.

The game runs on Unreal Engine 5 and leans on environmental systems that matter for how you play. Weather is not just decoration here, since snow and rain affect things like crop growth and how archers perform on the walls. Larger maps and new in-game events round out the pitch, and the store page promises a wide choice of castle pieces and cosmetics so your fortress can look the way you want.

Compared with earlier entries, the notable change is how openly the studio is building this one. Firefly says Stronghold 4 will be developed alongside its community and shaped by player feedback, in the same way as the public pre-release builds of its last few games. That is a sensible approach for a genre where balance and AI behavior only reveal their problems once thousands of people poke at them.

What is missing, and what it means for you

Three headline features are not in the first build: online multiplayer, the economic campaign and the cooperative skirmish trail. The developer says it will deliver these during Early Access, which it expects to last about six months, with the caveat that this could change. In plain terms, a full release before summer 2027 would be optimistic, and you should not count on it.

If you mostly want the story and sandbox castle building, the December build should be enough to start. If you play Stronghold for the economy campaign or for multiplayer sieges with friends, we would wait. There is no need to pay for something you cannot use yet, and Early Access games can change in price when they reach 1.0. We could not confirm a price from the pages we checked, so look at the Steam listing for the current figure rather than trusting a number you saw in a roundup.

The easiest way to decide is the demo. An updated demo is available on Steam now, and it lets you test whether the UE5 look, the new siege mechanics and the pacing suit you. Only PC through Steam has been announced, and nothing about consoles has been confirmed.

Our take

We like the structure of this launch. A real campaign, skirmish and sandbox at day one is a fairer Early Access offer than a bare skeleton, and the studio is honest about what is still missing. Our one worry is the six month estimate. Multiplayer, a co-op mode and a full economic campaign is a lot of work to deliver in that window, and the studio itself leaves room for the schedule to slip.

Our advice is simple: try the demo this month, and buy in on December 7 only if the siege and building loop clicks for you. If it does not, there is no rush, because the version you wait for will only get more complete.
