Dead Rails Class Tier List (October 2026)

This Dead Rails class tier list ranks 30 classes you can buy from the Tailor with Bonds or unlock through objectives, from the picks that carry a solo run to the free starter class, with seasonal event classes left out.

We compared four rankings published between October 2025 and September 2026 and kept the placements they share. Dead Rails rankings disagree more than most, so where they split we sided with the newest list and wrote the split into the note.

Whether you play solo or with a full train matters as much as the tier: Doctor and The Alamo are team classes, Vampire and Werewolf are solo classes, and the notes say which is which.

How we rank

We rank classes by how far they get a typical player toward the 80,000 meter finish: starting gear, the strength of the passive, how much it depends on teammates, and how it holds up once the night waves start. Cost in Bonds counts too, because a 35 Bond class that does most of what a 100 Bond class does is the better buy. Placements are the consensus of four community rankings with the September 2026 view breaking ties, and classes only available during a seasonal event are not ranked.

Tier by tier

S Tier, the meta

  • Cowboy: Revolver plus a tamed horse, best all round pick
  • Vampire: Fastest melee class, heals on hit, avoid sunlight
  • Survivalist: Damage climbs as health drops, rewards skilled play
  • Werewolf: Double stats at night, weaker by day
  • Eggslinger: Hatches an army, event reward not always obtainable

A Tier, excellent

  • Tycoon: Carried money converts into stats, scales late
  • Corrosioneer: Acid immunity and area damage for 35 Bonds
  • Doctor: Cheap revives, the best team support, weak solo
  • The Alamo: Sheet metal and barbed wire fortify the train early
  • Miner: Headlamp and pickaxe, cheap and always useful
  • Milkman: Stats scale with milk, strong once covered
  • Priest: Lightning immunity, holy water and crucifixes
  • Arsonist: Double fire damage, budget swarm control, S to C split

B Tier, solid

  • Hunter: Crossbow is great, but bitten wolves turn into werewolves
  • Packmaster: Three tamed wolves, attackers tame themselves
  • High Roller: Sells for more but draws lightning strikes
  • Frankenstein: One free self revive per run
  • Ghost: Ignores bullets, takes extra melee damage
  • Necromancer: Raises enemies as allies at a health cost
  • Knight: Sword and armor, best beside a King
  • Alien: Rifle and bodyguards, unlocked through a gamemode

C Tier, situational

  • Zombie: Eats corpses to heal but cannot use bandages
  • Conductor: Faster train, no melee weapon and half health
  • Demolitionist: Explosives and landmines, falls off once spent
  • King: Bonus stats only with Knights on the team
  • Cursed: Starts 10 percent weaker, peaks 15 percent stronger at 25 minutes
  • Musician: Banjo heals teammates, no weapon of its own
  • President: Meta on spring lists, bottom on the newest one

D Tier, skip

  • Ironclad: Full armor but a permanent speed penalty
  • None: Free starter, only a shovel

Dead Rails tier list FAQ

What is the best class in Dead Rails right now?

Cowboy for most players and Vampire for solo runs. Cowboy is the only class every ranking we checked puts in S tier, because a revolver and a tamed horse solve the two hardest early problems, damage and distance. Vampire is faster and heals on hit, but you have to manage sunlight, which is why some lists rate it a step lower.

What is the best cheap class in Dead Rails?

Doctor at 15 Bonds if you play with friends, and Corrosioneer at 35 Bonds if you play solo. Miner is also cheap and its headlamp pays for itself every night. Arsonist is the cheapest damage option, though the sources split on it: two rate it S for its fire damage, two rate it C because Molotovs run out.

Why do Dead Rails tier lists disagree so much?

Because most classes are good at one thing and bad at another. Ironclad is a great tank in a coordinated team and a liability solo, President is a roleplay favorite whose passive draws enemies from twice the distance, and Zombie heals for free but cannot use bandages. We rank for a typical mixed run and say in each note when solo and team play pull a class in different directions.

Is the Cursed class worth buying?

Only if you finish runs slowly. Cursed starts with health, damage and speed 10 percent below the free class and gains 1 percent per minute up to 15 percent above it at 25 minutes. Fast runs never see the payoff, so the one September 2026 ranking that covers it puts it in C, and we follow that until more data comes in.
