Final Fantasy Resonance is out today. Square Enix launched the first HD-2D game in the series on October 22 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and Xbox on PC. Everything shipped on the same day, which keeps things simple.

If you followed our write-up of the free demo, the launch changes very little about the plan: the demo save carries over, the price is the one Steam has listed for weeks, and the game is the same pixel-art-meets-modern-lighting RPG the publisher has been showing since June. What is new is that you can finally decide with the whole thing on the shelf.

What you are buying, and what it costs

The standard edition is $49.99 on Steam. A Digital Deluxe Upgrade is sold as a separate $14.99 item on Steam, so the deluxe version ends up around $65 in total if you add it on top of the base game. The Steam page lists Square Enix as publisher and Square Enix with LANCARSE as developers, with full audio in English and Japanese and text in eight languages.

The game follows Rain, a knight of the Kingdom of Grandshelt who commands an airship squadron at a young age, and his childhood friend Laswell. Combat is turn-based, but the pitch is accessibility plus depth: you hit enemy weaknesses to stagger them, break their defenses and earn extra turns. Instead of classic jobs, you build your party around Visions, echoes of earlier Final Fantasy characters who fight alongside you and unleash Resonance attacks. Square Enix also lists optional content for people who like a challenge, including a Colosseum, a Chamber of Arms with bosses sealed inside legendary weapons, and a showdown with Ultima Weapon.

One honest caveat: this is a rebuild of the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a mobile game. Square Enix says it was "refined and extensively rebuilt", and we have no reason to doubt that, but we also have not seen independent reviews of the finished game at the time of writing. Treat the bonus content as promised rather than proven.

PC requirements and who should wait

The Steam page lists Windows 11 on both the minimum and recommended tiers, which is the detail most likely to catch someone out. The minimum is a Ryzen 3 2300X or Core i3-8100, 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 1650 class card, aiming for 1080p at 30 FPS on the Low preset. Recommended asks for a Ryzen 5 2500X or the same i3, a Radeon RX 5500 XT or GTX 1650, and targets 1080p at 60 FPS on the highest preset. Storage is 15 GB, so the install is small by current standards. These are modest numbers for a pixel-art game, but the Windows 11 requirement rules out anyone still on Windows 10.

There is a small wrinkle on timing. Some outlets mentioned a possible October 23 date for Steam because of time zones, but the Steam page itself shows October 22, matching Square Enix's press release. If your region sees it a few hours later, that is a clock issue rather than a delay.

Our take: for $49.99 with a free demo and a carry-over save, the risk is low. Play the first chapter if you have not already, and if the stagger-and-extra-turn combat clicks, buy it. If you were hoping for a brand new story with no mobile heritage, the demo will tell you quickly. For more Square Enix on Switch 2, see our look at Final Fantasy X/X-2 coming to the console.

FAQ

How much does Final Fantasy Resonance cost?

The standard edition is $49.99 on Steam. A Digital Deluxe Upgrade is listed separately at $14.99 for people who already own the base game, so the deluxe route works out to roughly $65 in total if you buy in two steps.

Can I carry over my demo save?

Yes. Square Enix says demo save data carries over on every platform, so the first chapter you played in September counts. You do not need to replay those three to five hours.

Do I need Windows 11 to play it on PC?

According to the Steam page, yes. Both the minimum and recommended specs list Windows 11, with 8 GB of RAM, DirectX 12 and 15 GB of storage. If you are still on Windows 10, play the free demo or wait before buying.

Do I need to know Final Fantasy Brave Exvius?

No. The game retells the first story arc of that 2016 mobile title, but Square Enix describes it as rebuilt rather than ported. The story is self-contained, and the Final Fantasy cameos are a bonus rather than homework.
