DLSS 5 Goes Live September 3 in NBA 2K27, and It Is RTX 50 Series Only for Now
Nvidia's most argued about graphics feature in years finally has a launch date, and it is a basketball game that gets it first. On September 1, Nvidia confirmed that DLSS 5, which introduces what the company calls 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, goes live on September 3 at 9pm Pacific Time in NBA 2K27. It works on every GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPU, and on GeForce NOW Ultimate for people streaming from the service's RTX 5080 powered rigs. Older RTX 20, 30 and 40 Series cards are not on the list at launch.
The timing is deliberate. NBA 2K27 launches worldwide on September 4, and Deluxe and Ultra Edition owners have been in early access since August 28, so the 9pm PT switch on September 3 lands right as the full player base arrives. We covered the cover athletes and launch details for NBA 2K27 back in July.

What DLSS 5 actually does
Every DLSS version until now was about resolution and frame rate. Nvidia describes DLSS 5 as an AI model that takes the frame the game engine already rendered, along with the engine's geometry, textures, motion vectors and lighting buffers, and uses that data as a fixed foundation to generate more realistic lighting on top. The examples Nvidia leads with are skin that scatters light the way real skin does, light passing through ears and hair, and contact shadows where objects meet. Nvidia insists the model is deterministic, one frame in and one frame out, which is its answer to fears about flicker and invented detail.
That fear is not theoretical. An early build of the feature was found in NBA 2K27's files before launch, and people quickly injected it into other games, which kicked off a loud debate about whether it steamrolls a game's art direction. Nvidia's position is that developers stay in control. Studios can pick between several model variants, dial the intensity of fine detail and of broad lighting separately, and mask specific assets or scenes so the effect is applied only where they want it. Peter Kavic, Senior Producer at Visual Concepts, said in Nvidia's post that the team could "set the overall tone and style to match our existing art direction and then really get precise where it matters most."
Performance, and how to turn it on
Nvidia says the model got five times faster between its March showing and now, which is what made a single GPU across the whole RTX 50 Series lineup possible. Its own NBA 2K27 numbers, measured on the Ultra preset with ray tracing and the rest of the DLSS stack enabled, put an RTX 5090 at up to 370 FPS at 4K and 590 FPS at 1440p, with the RTX 5080, 5070 Ti and 5070 reaching 410, 350 and 260 FPS at 1440p. Those figures lean heavily on Multi Frame Generation, so treat them as Nvidia's best case. More optimization is promised for this fall.
Enabling it is simple. Install the September 3 GeForce Game Ready Driver through the Nvidia app, launch NBA 2K27, open Video Settings and switch on DLSS Neural Rendering. You can also toggle it on and off mid game with the F9 key, which is the fastest way to judge for yourself whether the look is an improvement or an intrusion. As for other games, Nvidia is only saying that more titles will integrate DLSS 5 "in the coming weeks and months." A separate Nvidia post from the same day confirms that this week's other big launches, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and The Blood of Dawnwalker, get DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution rather than DLSS 5.
Our take
We are glad the first game to ship this is a sports title with scanned real faces, because that is the fairest possible test of a feature built to make skin and hair look photoreal, and the F9 toggle means nobody has to take Nvidia's word for it. The bigger question is whether studios with a strong stylized look ever switch it on, and whether RTX 40 owners ever get it at all. Nvidia has not said no to either, but it has not said yes.

FAQ
When does DLSS 5 launch and in which game?
Nvidia says DLSS 5 launches September 3, 2026 at 9pm Pacific Time inside NBA 2K27, the first game to support 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. You need the September 3 GeForce Game Ready Driver, then enable DLSS Neural Rendering in the game's Video Settings.
Which graphics cards support DLSS 5?
At launch DLSS 5 runs on GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPUs, plus GeForce NOW Ultimate members streaming from RTX 5080 powered cloud rigs. RTX 20, 30 and 40 Series cards are not supported at launch.
