Anyone who played the original Final Fantasy VII remembers the moment the Weapons woke up. Nearly thirty years later, Square Enix is finally ready to let a new generation live it. At Gamescom Opening Night Live, director Naoki Hamaguchi took the stage to present The Planet's Crisis, a new trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter of the Remake trilogy.

The headline facts first. Revelation is still on track for Spring 2027, the same window Square Enix gave earlier this year, and it launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC. No exact date yet, but the window held, and after a Gamescom that leaned heavily on remasters and remakes, as we noted in our Gamescom 2026 preview, this was the show's biggest look at a brand new blockbuster.

The Weapons finally wake up

The trailer is built around the planet's colossal guardians, and it does not hold back. Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon and Ultima Weapon all appear on screen, emerging to defend a world in crisis and making no distinction between friend and foe as they level everything in their path. In the original 1997 game, Ruby and Emerald were brutal optional superbosses that ended many playthroughs, so seeing them rendered at this scale carries real weight for longtime fans.

Square Enix also confirmed the trailer's other reveals in its press release. There is a new summon, Typhon, shown mid battle. Cloud and Tifa appear in new job style outfits called FITS, with Warrior and Black Mage variants that come with their own abilities. And the publisher teased ultra challenging endgame battles, which reads like a direct promise to the players who spent 1997 grinding for Knights of the Round.

A world you cross by airship, parachute and Chocobo

The other half of the trailer is about scale. Revelation expands the open world formula with seamless travel aboard the Highwind, and you can apparently step off the airship and parachute straight down into a region. Grappling hooks are in, with Yuffie shown swinging through Wutai, and Chocobos return as ground mounts. The pitch is a planet you cross without loading screens between the sky and the surface.

That is an ambitious closer for a trilogy that started in the corridors of Midgar in 2020. It is also the first time the finale arrives on every major platform at once, which matters after years of staggered exclusivity for the first two chapters. The Witcher is not the only classic getting a victory lap this week, as CD Projekt's own remaster news proved, but this one has the clearest stakes: one spring, one release, and the end of a story Square Enix has been retelling for seven years. We would still like an actual date, though. Spring 2027 is a season, not a promise.
