Mewgenics Is Out Today on Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at $39.99, and Your Steam Cat Saves Come With You
Seven months after it took over Steam, Mewgenics is finally on consoles. Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel's cat breeding tactics roguelike launches today, September 8, on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, published by Nicalis and priced at $39.99 on every platform.
If the name rings a bell, that is because the date was first announced by Geoff Keighley on stage at Opening Night Live in August, right after a live performance of one of the game's songs. We flagged the show in our gamescom 2026 preview, and McMillen himself admitted in the official Steam post that a three day heads up was a little wild even by his standards.

What the console version actually does
The headline feature is account linking. All three console versions can be tied to your Steam account, and it works in both directions: each save slot can be pulled down from Steam Cloud to continue on console, and console progress can be pushed back up to the cloud. For a game that many players have sunk well over a hundred hours into, that removes the biggest reason to stay on PC.
Controls got the same care. Every console version plays with a standard controller, but all three also accept keyboard and mouse input. Switch 2 adds Joy-Con 2 mouse mode and touchscreen support, and McMillen says Glaiel's testing found the Switch 2 mouse controls "basically perfect". PS5 owners get DualSense touch pad support. On Xbox, the store page lists 4K, 60 frames per second and above, and Series X|S optimization, with console keyboard and mouse and cloud saves.
The console launch also ships alongside a language update on PC. Version 1.1.21239 adds full Japanese, Korean, Russian and Simplified Chinese localization after a public beta period, and those languages are in the console builds too.
The game, for anyone who skipped the PC launch
Mewgenics is a turn based tactics game wrapped around a breeding sim. You raise cats at home, pick which ones mate, and manipulate genetics across generations so that traits, mutations and abilities pass down. Then you send a squad out on roguelike runs where positioning and environmental interactions decide fights. The Steam page counts more than ten classes with around 75 abilities each, over 900 items, more than 200 enemies and bosses, and a campaign that runs well past 200 hours if you let it.
It has been a hit. Since its February 10 Steam launch, more than 28,000 user reviews have landed it a Very Positive rating at 91 percent. It comes from the pair behind The Binding of Isaac and The End Is Nigh, and it plays and sounds like it, with Ridiculon back on the soundtrack.
Our take, and what comes next
McMillen also laid out the roadmap. A small free update is in the works with what he calls a new way to play plus a batch of unlockable items, with more details promised later this year. Development has also officially started on the game's first paid DLC, though there is nothing to show yet. Physical editions for PS5 and Switch 2 are up for preorder at $49.99 and are expected to ship in the first quarter of 2027, with the Switch 2 edition carrying the whole game on the cartridge.
Our honest read is that this is one of the safer $39.99 purchases of the month. It is a proven game with strong reviews, a console price that sits above the Steam price but comes with two way save syncing, and mouse support that makes Switch 2 the obvious handheld pick. The only reason to wait is if you want the cartridge, and that is a spring problem, not a today one.
