Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Is Out Now, and the Early Verdict Is Very Good
We have a soft spot for studios that resist the sequel autopilot, and Asobo just proved the point. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launched yesterday on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, priced at $49.99. Instead of a third round of Amicia and Hugo, the Bordeaux studio handed the torch to Sophia, the fierce plunderer from Requiem, and shipped a prequel set fifteen years earlier on a place called the Minotaur's Island.
The launch trailer, which premiered during Opening Night Live at this year's Gamescom, sets the tone with a haunting reinterpretation of Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence. It is worth two minutes of your time before you decide anything.

What Sophia's island actually plays like
Resonance keeps the series' narrative-driven backbone but swaps rat swarms for mythology. Sophia arrives on the Minotaur's Island chasing the secrets of her own past, with her companion Leni along for the descent. The island itself is the hook: the setting shifts between the medieval world the series is known for and the ruins of the Minoan era, and the game leans on that time-shifting for its puzzles, including light-manipulation sequences deep underground. Combat is closer and more physical than before, built around dynamic melee rather than a sling and alchemy, and something large and patient stalks you through the lower depths, which keeps the old Plague Tale tension intact even without a single rat on screen.
Focus and Asobo are positioning this as a full standalone story about loss, betrayal and destiny, so newcomers can start here without homework. Olivier Derivière returns on the score, which has been one of the series' quiet strengths since Innocence, and the soundtrack is already up on streaming platforms. A Heritage Pack with a Minoan sword, Alec's pendant and a thirty-plus page in-game artbook was the preorder bonus and now sells separately as a small DLC.
The early verdict, and the easy way in
The first wave of players seems convinced. On Steam the game opened at Very Positive, with 94 percent of its first few hundred reviews recommending it, and the critic average on Metacritic currently sits at 85. That is a strong start for a game trying something structurally riskier than a straight sequel.
The easiest way to try it remains the one we flagged last week: Resonance is day one on Game Pass for Ultimate and PC Game Pass members, with Xbox Play Anywhere covering console, PC, cloud and handheld. If you have the subscription, this is exactly what it is for. If you do not, $49.99 for a polished, finished single-player adventure from the Plague Tale team, with no store and no live-service strings, feels like the kind of deal we wish were less rare.

Do I need to play A Plague Tale: Innocence or Requiem first?
