Xbox Mythic Achievements Are Live for Xbox Insiders

Xbox players have been asking for a Platinum style completion reward for roughly two console generations, and as of September 29 it exists, at least for people in the Xbox Insider program. Xbox Wire published the details in a post from Alex Charters, Senior Product Manager, and Eden Marie, Principal Software Engineering Lead, and the headline is refreshingly simple. Complete every original achievement in a game and that game earns a Mythic Achievement.

The rules are worth reading carefully because they settle the arguments people have been having for years. Only the original achievement list counts. Anything added later through DLC or updates is not required, and the achievement list now tags those entries as "add-on" so you always know what stands between you and Mythic status. Once you have it, it is yours to keep. There is no expiry and no clawback if a game later adds more achievements.

Your old completions already count

The part that will send a lot of people straight to their profile is retroactivity. Xbox says Mythic Achievements have already been added to eligible games you completed in the past, and that explicitly includes Xbox 360 titles. If you cleared every achievement in a game fifteen years ago, it should already be sitting there with Mythic status. We have not seen Xbox publish a full list of which older games are eligible, so expect some edge cases, but the intent is clearly to honor your whole history rather than start the count from today.

To show all of that off, profiles get a new Gaming tab. It gathers your achievements, your progress toward the next Gamerscore milestone badge, and the games you have completed, and Mythic entries get a heroic frame in your achievement history so they stand out from ordinary unlocks. The tab is public in the sense that you can browse your friends' Gaming tabs too and see which games they have taken to Mythic. On the tracking side, every game's achievement list now has a progress bar at the top showing how close you are, with a filter that hides everything except the original achievements you still need. Xbox says the same progress information appears across the system, including in the Guide and in individual achievement details.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma posted a short clip on X the same day showing the Mythic unlock firing in Gears of War: E-Day. It looks like a normal achievement pop with its own badge and sound, which fits with the wider refresh of achievement notifications that Insiders have also been testing. E-Day is a fitting showcase since it is the next big first party launch, and we have already covered when Gears of War: E-Day unlocks for Premium owners and Game Pass members if you want to be among the first to chase its Mythic.

Our take

This is a feature Xbox could have shipped a decade ago, and the fact that it did not add new Gamerscore or new challenges is the right call. It simply gives completionists a visible, permanent marker and a cleaner way to see what is left, which is exactly what the years of requests were about. The DLC exemption is also the sensible reading. Nobody wants a finished game to lose its status because a season pass arrived two years later.

The open question is timing. Xbox has not said when Mythic Achievements reach everyone, only that Insiders get the early look starting September 29. If you want in now, the Xbox Insider Hub is a free download on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC, and Xbox is collecting feedback on the Xbox Insider subreddit. For everyone else, this looks like a matter of weeks rather than months given the retroactive data is already in place, but that is our guess, not an announced date.

FAQ

How do you earn a Mythic Achievement on Xbox?

You earn one by completing every original achievement in a game. Achievements added later through DLC or updates are not required, and once a game reaches Mythic status it stays that way permanently, according to Xbox.

Do Mythic Achievements work on games I finished years ago?

Yes. Xbox says Mythic Achievements have already been added to eligible games you completed in the past, including Xbox 360 titles, so some of your old completions may already show as Mythic when you check your profile.

When do Mythic Achievements come to everyone?

Xbox has not given a date. As of September 29, 2026 the feature is an early look for Xbox Insiders only. Anyone can join the program by downloading the Xbox Insider Hub on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One or Windows PC.
