Battlefield players have been asking for proper sea combat since launch, and tomorrow they finally get it. Season 4 arrives Tuesday, July 21 at 4:00am PT (12:00pm UTC) for both Battlefield 6 and the free REDSEC battle royale, and it is built almost entirely around water. New boats, a dynamic wave system, a brand new island map, and a staged rollout that saves Wake Island and a full Top Gun crossover for August.

What lands on day one

The headline addition is Tsuru Reef, a tropical archipelago that EA is calling "the biggest battlefield yet." It mixes open water and huge air space with steep cliffs, dense jungle, old war bunkers and, because this is Battlefield, a luxury resort waiting to be leveled. Naval warfare itself comes with a dynamic wave system, so swells genuinely affect how you drive, aim and ambush, and you can now revive teammates while in the water.

Two new boats carry the fighting: an armored patrol boat with an autocannon up front and a mortar for the gunner, plus a light four seat RHIB transport with a mounted machine gun. On the infantry side, three weapons join at launch, including the EF88, an Australian bullpup assault rifle, and the VSSM, a marksman rifle with an integrated suppressor and a full auto option. Update 1.4.1.0 also adds a spectator mode and custom lobbies through Portal.

Top Gun and Wake Island in August

The season runs in three phases. Phase two lands August 18 and brings back Wake Island, the most iconic map in the series, now with aircraft carrier gameplay. It arrives alongside a Top Gun collaboration made with Paramount: two new two seat fighter jets, a redesigned Carrier Strike mode, a jets only Fighter Sweep mode in REDSEC, and characters drawn from Top Gun: Maverick. A third phase called Tidal Strike follows on September 15 with a collection event and more Portal and REDSEC features.

Our take

This looks like the most ambitious season Battlefield 6 has had, and water physics that actually matter could genuinely change how conquest flows on coastal maps. The one real sting is Wake Island. It is the map everyone associates with naval Battlefield, and it sits a month behind the naval season it belongs to. If the boats feel good on Tsuru Reef, the wait will be bearable. If day one turns out thin, expect players to say the real season starts August 18.
