Season 4 of Battlefield 6 has been a long one, and today it gets its third and final phase. Game update 1.4.3.0 went up for download at 8:00 UTC this Tuesday, September 15, and the Tidal Strike content switched on at 12:00 UTC across Battlefield 6 and the free REDSEC battle royale. The headline feature is one players have asked for since launch: proximity chat, though only in REDSEC for now and only as a test.

If you have been following along, this is the phase EA sketched out back in July when Season 4 launched with naval warfare, and it closes the loop after the Top Gun and Wake Island drop in August. Here is what actually changed today.

Proximity chat, but only in REDSEC for now

EA is calling this the first iteration of Proximity Chat, and it arrives through Battlefield Labs in the live game rather than as a finished multiplayer feature. That means it is limited to REDSEC battle royale for the moment. Nearby players can hear each other based on position, and the audio is shaped by the environment, so walls, indoor spaces and vehicles all affect what reaches you. Up to four players can be heard at once. When that limit is hit, a UI message tells you, and extra speakers are temporarily muted until a channel frees up.

The controls live below the Commo Rose, where you can swap channels or turn Proximity Chat off globally. You can see who is speaking, and mute and report options sit on the scoreboard. EA says it wants to evaluate audio range, clarity, controls, moderation tools and the effect on the flow of a round, then use feedback and live data to adjust before bringing the feature to regular Multiplayer at a later date. We think the cautious rollout is the right call. Proximity chat is the kind of feature that makes battle royale genuinely funnier and more tense, and also the kind that gets abused within an hour if the moderation tools are not ready.

Deep Six, the Phantom Program and a reworked Tsuru Reef

Deep Six is the new Collection Event, and it runs from September 15 through October 12 in both Battlefield 6 and REDSEC. You complete contracts and gather intel devices to unlock a series of rewards, including Weapon Packages and customization items. The final reward for finishing the full event is the Diver's Knife, a melee weapon EA describes as originally carried by Royal Navy divers. Alongside it, REDSEC gets the Phantom Program, a limited time operation built around a breach of the Fort Lyndon security network. You hunt for hidden intelligence and easter eggs, piece together an access code and work your way through the system, in Solos, Duos or Quads while it is active, for Weapon Packages and other rewards.

On the multiplayer side, Tsuru Reef Breakthrough has been substantially redesigned, with expanded sectors, new flanking routes and boat access across the map. Carrier Strike gets spawn camping protections, and both Carrier Strike and Fighter Sweep, the modes introduced with the Top Gun update, are extended through the rest of Season 4. Custom Lobbies now cover nine modes including Breakthrough, Rush, Domination and Team Deathmatch, Ranked gains an AFK system that warns inactive players before removing them, Portal adds King of the Hill and Domination as verified modes plus an Ocean sandbox map for creators, and every weapon sight gets cleaner reticles with less clutter.

Our take on the balance pass

The patch notes run long on vehicles, and most of it reads as sensible. Transport and Scout Helicopters get handling adjustments, the RCB90 boat's health goes up from 800 to 1,000, the AH-6 Little Bird minigun does less damage to patrol boats, and pilots no longer get a directional warning when a MANPAD locks on. Taken together it nudges Season 4's naval sandbox toward the boats and away from the helicopters that have dominated it.

There is no new map and no new weapon beyond the knife, so if you skipped the Top Gun phase, Tidal Strike alone will not pull you back. What it does do is give REDSEC players a real reason to log in tonight, and it sets up the two week anniversary event EA has said is planned for late September. Season 5 is where the next big swing lands, and EA has not dated it yet.
