Thirteen years after Edward Kenway first set sail, Ubisoft is bringing him back. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, the full remake of 2013's Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, launches this Wednesday, July 9, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. We have gone through Ubisoft's launch rundown so you know exactly what you are paying for.

What the remake actually changes

This is not a texture pass. Ubisoft says Resynced was built from the ground up on the latest evolution of its Anvil engine, with ray-traced lighting, reflections, modernized water simulation and 60 fps options on consoles.

The gameplay changes go deeper than we expected. Stealth gets an observe mode plus the ability to crouch and dive anywhere. Combat adds new takedowns and tighter parrying. Parkour now supports manual jumps and side ejects, closer to what the recent entries do. Naval battles gain secondary weapons like shrapnel barrels, and the Jackdaw gets an officers system, customization skins and, yes, ship cats.

There is new content too: additional missions voiced by the returning Matt Ryan, expanded story beats, ten new shanties and a reworked Kenway's Fleet for passive income. One structural change worth knowing before you buy: according to Wikipedia's rundown of the project, the modern-day Abstergo sections have been removed and replaced with narrative "What If?" rifts, and the Freedom Cry DLC is not included.

Release date and platforms

Resynced arrives July 9, 2026 on PS5 (with PS5 Pro enhancements), Xbox Series X|S and PC via the Ubisoft Store, Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is Steam Deck Verified at launch and also playable through GeForce Now.

Editions and pre-orders

Four editions are on the table. Standard is $59.99, Deluxe is $69.99 with the Master Assassin character and naval packs, and the $199.99 Collector's Edition adds an Edward figurine, a leather logbook, a steelbook and more. A physical Launch Edition at $59.99 bundles an artbook and poster. Pre-ordering any edition gets you the Blackbeard's Crimson pack with an Edward costume and perked weapons.

Pre-order

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is available to pre-order for PS5 and Xbox Series X ahead of the July 9 release.

Our take

Black Flag was already the series' most likable game, so the remake mostly has to not break it. The $59.99 standard price is fair for a full rebuild, and the gameplay changes read like genuine fixes rather than filler. That said, the missing Freedom Cry content stings, and no cosmetic pack is worth pre-ordering for on its own. If you are unsure, waiting a few days for launch impressions costs you nothing but the Crimson pack.
