The Call of Duty Movie Is Officially Set in the Modern Warfare Universe

Call of Duty movie news card announcing the Modern Warfare universe setting and June 30, 2028 theatrical date

We finally know which corner of Call of Duty the movie lives in. Speaking at Fanatics Fest in New York, director Peter Berg confirmed that Paramount's Call of Duty film is set in the Modern Warfare universe, the sub-series that turned the franchise into a global phenomenon back in 2007.

That is the first concrete detail we have had since Paramount and Activision announced the project in September 2025. Plot details have been kept under wraps since day one, and that has not changed. What we do have now is a setting, a creative team and a date: the movie opens in theaters on June 30, 2028.

What we actually know

Berg is directing, co-writing and producing. He is the filmmaker behind Lone Survivor and Patriots Day, so grounded military action is very much his home turf. He is joined by Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone and writer of Sicario, who co-writes and produces alongside him.

Choosing Modern Warfare answers the biggest open question about the adaptation. The franchise spans World War 2, the Cold War era of Black Ops and even futuristic settings, and any of them could have carried a film. Modern Warfare means contemporary, realistic geopolitical conflict, the tone the series is best known for.

What it does not answer is who we will see on screen. No casting has been announced, and Berg did not say whether the film uses established characters or a brand new cast within the same universe. Captain Price fans will have to keep waiting.

The timing is no accident

The confirmation landed at the same event where Activision locked in the Modern Warfare 4 beta dates for August. The Modern Warfare name is about to be everywhere for the next two years, with the new game arriving first and the film following in 2028. Paramount and Activision have also said their deal covers the potential for more Call of Duty film and television projects beyond this one, so a strong opening could turn this into a full franchise.

Our take

Video game movies finally have a decent track record, and on paper this creative pairing makes sense. Berg and Sheridan know how to shoot grounded military stories, and Modern Warfare is the right sandbox for that style. Our caution is the same one we apply to every adaptation this early: a setting and two names tell us very little about the actual film, and two years is a long runway. We would rather see a first trailer with Price's beard in it before getting excited. For now, this is a sensible direction, and sensible is a fine start.
