Modern Warfare 4 Shows Its First Campaign Footage, and Preordering Now Gets You the Story a Week Early
We have known the broad strokes of Modern Warfare 4 for months, but until this week the campaign was all setup and no footage. That changed on July 30, when Call of Duty released a campaign first look built around a mission called Losing Ground, the first real look at the story mode running rather than being described in a press release.
The vignette lands alongside a reminder that carries real weight for anyone planning a preorder: the campaign unlocks on October 16 for digital preorders, a full week before the game's October 23 launch. Early access to a Call of Duty story mode has become a tradition at this point, but seeing the mission you would actually be playing makes the offer a lot more concrete.

Losing Ground puts regular soldiers in the spotlight
The footage follows a South Korean infantry squad fighting through a collapsing frontline as North Korean forces push a full-scale invasion, moving through trenches and shattered urban streets while tanks and artillery hammer everything around them. That framing is a deliberate break from the series formula. Modern Warfare has always been a story about elite operators, and Losing Ground instead plants you among ordinary troops caught in the middle of something far bigger than them.
That perspective belongs to Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time, and Infinity Ward has said his squad's desperate fight through collapsing cities is one half of the campaign. The other half follows Captain Price, now operating outside the system he once served, chasing a weapon powerful enough to shift the balance of the whole conflict. Between the grunt's-eye view and Price going off the books, this is shaping up as the most tonally ambitious Modern Warfare story in years, and the same universe Hollywood is betting on with the Call of Duty movie.
How the early access week actually works
The details matter here, because not every preorder qualifies. Campaign Early Access starts Friday, October 16 for players who digitally preorder or prepurchase the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam or Nintendo Switch 2. Activision notes that Switch 2 preorders open later this year, so Nintendo players will get their window too. During that week only the campaign is playable, with multiplayer and everything else unlocking at the October 23 launch.
If you would rather try before you buy, the Modern Warfare 4 beta dates are already locked, with early access on August 21 and an open beta from August 28. Between that, the campaign week and launch itself, October's biggest shooter now has three separate on-ramps.
Our take: showing actual campaign gameplay to sell an early access perk is the right order of operations, and Losing Ground looks genuinely different from the usual night-vision heroics. Whether a whole campaign can carry that weight is the question October 16 will answer.
