College Football 27 Brings the Series to PC for the First Time, and Steam Is Not Impressed

PC players have watched college football games stay locked to consoles for a very long time, so this week is a genuine milestone. EA Sports College Football 27 launched worldwide on July 9 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and, for the first time in the history of the series, PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and the EA app.

A proper PC port, on paper

EA says the PC version plays identically to the console one, and it ships with the options PC players expect: adjustable visual presets, frame rate controls, HDR, ultrawide display support and ray-traced lighting on supported hardware. Cross-play works across all platforms, so a PC player can matchmake with friends on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S from day one. Early access followed the usual EA pattern, with MVP+ members in from July 2 and Deluxe Edition buyers from July 6 before the July 9 worldwide release.

What you actually do in it

Developer Tiburon built this year's edition around three pillars. Dynasty Blueprint has you answering to an athletic director and spending Dynasty Points on recruiting, NIL, staff and facilities. Road to Glory lets you create a player, pick a position and chase the Heisman. And Mascot Mashup is the silly one, chaotic eleven on eleven matches with a roster of more than 120 collectible mascots.

A rocky first day on Steam

Here is the honest part. At the time of writing, the game's Steam user rating sits at Mostly Negative, with only 22 percent of roughly 690 launch reviews positive. That is a harsh welcome for a series making its PC debut. The store page also carries an AI disclosure, noting that the game uses AI-generated content in storylines, commentary and CPU playcalling, which some players will want to know before buying.

Our take

The PC port itself is the story we care about, and getting ray tracing, ultrawide support and full cross-play in a first attempt is a solid foundation. But we would wait a week or two before spending money. Launch window reviews this negative usually mean technical friction or monetization complaints, and both tend to get clearer, and sometimes patched, fast. If you have been waiting years to run a college program on PC, the game is finally here. Just let the first patch land before you commit.
