When we covered the Palworld 1.0 announcement two weeks ago, the open question was whether players who drifted away during early access would actually come back for the finish line. We have our answer. Over its first weekend out of early access, Palworld peaked at 855,525 concurrent players on Steam, and Pocketpair confirmed on Monday that it had passed the 850,000 mark, calling itself "absolutely blown away" to see the Palpagos Islands busy again.

How big is 855,000, really

It is the second highest player count in Palworld's history. Nothing will likely ever touch the 2.1 million peak from its viral early access debut in January 2024, but the comparison that matters is more recent: for most of the past year the game hovered between 25,000 and 50,000 weekly peak players, with brief spikes above 200,000 for the Feybreak update. Multiplying your active audience by roughly twenty times overnight, two and a half years after launch, almost never happens.

And that is Steam alone. Version 1.0 arrived the same day on PlayStation 5, Xbox and Game Pass, so the real worldwide number is higher than what the Steam counter shows.

What brought everyone back

The update itself is enormous. The patch notes run 27 pages and cover 72 new Pals, the long teased World Tree, the new floating island region of Sunreach, a raised level cap, new weapons, reworked breeding, and a visual and audio overhaul across the whole map. Crucially, all of it is free for existing owners, and Pocketpair did not raise the price for new buyers either.

That decision looks smart now. A paid expansion would have converted a fraction of lapsed players. A free 1.0 converted hundreds of thousands of them in a weekend. Palworld has never used redeemable codes, but if the survival itch spreads to your other games, our game codes hub covers the ones that do.

Our take

Early access exits are usually quiet formalities. Pocketpair treated 1.0 as a second launch, saved its biggest content for it, and got second launch numbers in return. The studio says the journey has only just begun, which is the usual line, but with this many players back on the islands it is hard to argue. The honest caveat: launch weekends flatter everyone, and the number worth watching is where the player count settles in August once the novelty wears off.
