Fallout 3 and New Vegas Remasters Are Real, and Fallout 5 Is Officially in Preproduction

Every few months for the past several years, a Fallout 3 remaster rumor has floated by, and every time we filed it under maybe. Today Bethesda Game Studios ended the guessing with a note published on its own site, and it confirms more than anyone expected in a single post.

Both classic Fallouts are being remastered

The headline: remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development. Bethesda was careful to say that "we're not announcing any dates today", and it did not name platforms either, so temper the hype accordingly. Still, after the Oblivion remaster showed how well this treatment can land, official confirmation that both 2008's Capital Wasteland and 2010's Mojave are getting the same care is a big deal.

New Vegas is the one that makes this announcement interesting. Fallout 3 was always the likelier candidate since Bethesda made it in house, but New Vegas was built by Obsidian Entertainment, and its remaster arriving alongside a confirmed new Obsidian Fallout game suggests the two studios are working together far more closely than before.

Fallout 5 is real, but far away

The note also confirms Fallout 5 has entered preproduction. Bethesda says it will be built on Creation Engine 3, the new version of its long serving engine that will also power The Elder Scrolls VI, which remains in full production. The studio shared one number along the way: Fallout 4 has now sold 35 million copies.

Preproduction means design documents and prototypes, not a game you will play soon. The Elder Scrolls VI is clearly ahead in line, so Fallout 5 is best understood as the destination at the end of a long road that runs through the remasters first.

Our take

This reads like Bethesda buying goodwill and patience at the same time, and honestly, it works. The remasters give Fallout fans something concrete to wait for while The Elder Scrolls VI finishes, and handing the universe partly back to Obsidian is the move players have requested for fifteen years. The missing pieces matter though: no dates, no platforms, no footage. Until those arrive, treat this as a roadmap, not a launch calendar. It is still the best Fallout news in years.
