Kingdom Hearts Is Live in Fortnite Today: Sora, Riku, Kairi and Roxas Hit the Shop, the Kingdom Key Is a Mythic, and a Heart-Shaped Moon Hangs Over the Island

Fortnite crossovers stopped being surprising a long time ago, but this one has a different weight to it. Kingdom Hearts and Fortnite have been rumored together for years, and Sora kept turning up in leaks that never went anywhere. Today it is real. Epic pushed the v42.20 update on Thursday, September 17, and its official post opens with "Fight the darkness as Sora and friends." The Sora, Riku, Kairi and Roxas Outfits are in the Fortnite Shop right now, and the Island itself has been redecorated to match.

We went through Epic's announcement post and the full v42.20 update notes so you know exactly what changed, what is timed, and what is still unknown. Here is the official trailer first, since it does a better job than words at showing how far the crossover goes.

The Kingdom Key, Sea Salt Ice Cream, and a moon shaped like a heart

The centerpiece is the Kingdom Key, Sora's Keyblade, and it is a real weapon rather than a cosmetic. Epic's notes describe it as a melee weapon that lets you "unleash a flurry of melee combos, and call down a shocking bolt on your opponents." So it is a close-range combo tool with a lightning strike attached, which is about as faithful to the source games as a battle royale can manage. Alongside it comes Sea Salt Ice Cream, the blue treat from the series, which restores health and shields for you and nearby teammates when eaten.

Look up and you will notice the moon over the Island is now a giant heart, a direct nod to Kingdom Hearts. Two new Match Overrides spawn beneath it. Recovery, which works for squads and match-wide, makes every elimination with any weapon drop healing orbs. Level Up is squad-only and spawns a Mythic Kingdom Key for each squad member right where they are standing. If you have been following this season since the Override launch, you already know how these mid-match rule twists work, and this pair fits the theme neatly.

The cosmetic side is where most fans will spend their V-Bucks. Each of the four Outfits comes with its own Back Bling, Pickaxe and a LEGO Fortnite style, and Epic also points to the Shadow Steppers Kicks, shoes modeled on the Shadow Heartless. Epic's post does not list prices, so we are not going to guess them. Check the Shop in your own client before deciding.

Power Hours this weekend, plus everything else in v42.20

The timed part of the story is Saturday, September 19. Epic is running two Kingdom Hearts Power Hours, from 2 PM to 4 PM ET and again from 9 PM to 11 PM ET. During those windows every player drops in with the Kingdom Key and a Sea Salt Ice Cream already in their inventory, Hacker Sprite variants appear more often, and 1-Up Tokens and Portable Extractors can drop from Chests. If you want a low-effort taste of the Keyblade without hunting for it, that is the time to log in.

The rest of v42.20 is a meaty update on its own. Rebecca's Guns join the loot pool as a dual-wielded Assault Rifle and SMG combo, with an Exotic version that fires ricocheting bullets, and Loot Hacks refreshed with the Hyperburst Pistol, Mammoth Pistol, Reaper Sniper Rifle, Deadeye DMR, Flowberry Fizz and Rocket Ram. Four more Match Overrides arrived alongside the Kingdom Hearts pair: Dynamic Storm, Super Shot, Big Boom and Healing Overdrive, with Suppressing Fire and Health Siphon following on September 24. A Tetris Tower mid-match objective and four new Sprites, including Crash Bandicoot and Blinky, round it out. North American players should also know Epic merged NA-West, NA-Central and NA-East into a single region with a selectable subregion preference under Settings, then Game, then Language and Region.

Our take

We did not expect the Kingdom Hearts crossover to land this fully. A functional Keyblade, a themed healing item, two custom Overrides and a rebuilt moon is a lot more than four skins in a Shop rotation, and it lands a few weeks after the v42.10 update that already reshaped the season. It also arrives while Square Enix is building toward Kingdom Hearts 4 in late 2027, so the timing is no accident. The open question is price, which Epic has not published, so set your expectations before opening your wallet. Everything else is live now, and Saturday's Power Hours are the easiest way to try the Kingdom Key for free.
