If you were waiting for Final Fantasy XIV in your pocket, we have bad news. LightSpeed Studios and Square Enix announced on July 17 that Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is shutting down in China on September 30, 2026, and that the planned global release on iOS and Android has been cancelled outright. The game will have lived barely fifteen months.

What the announcement actually says

The official service termination notice explains that Tencent's LightSpeed Studios and Square Enix have agreed to end their licensing deal, citing business adjustments and "changes in the market environment." Both companies describe the decision as amicable, and the statement includes an apology to everyone outside China who had been waiting for the worldwide version.

The wind-down is already underway. New player registrations and in-game top-ups have been suspended, servers go dark on September 30 at 11:00 AM local time, and the forums and customer support close on October 15. Account and character data will be deleted afterward in line with Chinese data protection law.

A short life for a big project

FFXIV Mobile was revealed in November 2024 as a faithful mobile rebuild of the MMO, starting with the A Realm Reborn storyline, complete with jobs, raids, chocobo racing and the Gold Saucer. It launched in China in June 2025 after several well-received playtests, and a global rollout was repeatedly described as the next step. That step is now off the table completely, not delayed, not reworked, cancelled.

To be clear, none of this touches the main Final Fantasy XIV on PC and consoles. The core MMO is a separate game run directly by Square Enix, and it carries on exactly as before.

Our take

Shutting down a live game is always rough on the players who invested time and money in it, and getting just over a year of service stings. The cancellation of the global version is the part that will sting most for everyone else, because the mobile port genuinely looked competent and millions of players never got the chance to try it. The honest read is that the mobile MMO market is brutal, and even one of the biggest names in the genre could not make the numbers work. If you want Eorzea, the real thing on PC and console remains the only way in, and on this evidence it will stay that way for a long while.
