Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster Lands on Switch 2 Today, Days After the Game Turned 25

Some games pick their launch dates better than others. Final Fantasy X turned 25 on July 19, a quarter century since Tidus first washed up in Spira on the PlayStation 2, and Square Enix marked the occasion with an anniversary video before shipping the HD Remaster of both X and X-2 on Nintendo Switch 2 today, July 23, as a $49.99 digital release.

What you get on Switch 2

This is the same generous package the remaster has always been, now on Nintendo's new hardware. Both full games are included, with character, monster and background graphics remade in full HD, a fully remastered and arranged soundtrack, and the extra bosses, abilities and story content from the International versions that originally skipped Western shores. Square Enix quotes over 100 combined hours across the two adventures, and that number is honest if you chase the endgame superbosses.

The quality-of-life additions carry over too. A high-speed mode fast-forwards the grindy stretches, and you can switch off random encounters entirely when you just want to walk to the next story beat. The download comes in at 27.4 GB, the game supports TV, tabletop and handheld play, and save data backup works through Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves.

The catch, and who should buy

There is one real sting here. If you already own the remaster on the original Switch, there is no upgrade path or discount, and the Switch 2 edition is a separate full-price purchase. Your old save data does not carry over either. For a port of a collection that has appeared on six other platforms since 2013, that is a hard pill, and it is worth knowing before you check out.

We think this remains one of the easiest RPG recommendations on any system. Final Fantasy X is still a beautifully paced story with one of the best combat systems the series ever shipped, and X-2 is a stranger, lighter game that has aged into a cult favorite. On a handheld with a modern screen, the HD art holds up remarkably well. The value question is entirely about whether you have played it recently. Newcomers on Switch 2 are getting a bargain at $49.99 for two hundred-hour-class RPGs. Existing Switch owners can safely keep the version they have unless the new hardware bump matters to them.
