We expected twenty minutes of systems talk from today's Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Direct. What we got instead was Nintendo quietly flipping the entire premise on its head. The four heroes competing in the Heroic Games, the setup the game has been marketed on for almost a year, turn out to be the opening act. The real story starts five years later, when the Dagdan Empire is collapsing under a revived demon god named Balor, all four heroes have vanished, and the progenitor god Sothis summons a brand new soul to fix it. That soul is you.

The new character is called Eshmel, a customizable protagonist with male and female variants in the tradition of the series' recent avatars, and Nintendo is billing them as the game's true protagonist. Longtime fans will also recognize Sothis, a name that carries plenty of weight from Three Houses. Whether this Sothis is the same being or a shared bit of mythology is exactly the kind of thread the community will be pulling on between now and launch on September 17, when the game arrives exclusively on Switch 2. Preorders opened on the eShop today.

Time travel is the whole game, not a gimmick

Eshmel's central power comes from the goddess Fortuna, and it works on two levels. Narratively, you can travel back to the Heroic Games to change the fates of Cai, Dietrich, Theodora and Leda, the four heroes whose personal quests we covered when the Direct was announced this morning, or press on toward Balor without them. Nintendo frames it as a genuine choice, and heroes you save join your forces for the endgame. Mechanically, a rewind called Fortuna's Blessing lets you roll a battle back to any earlier point without penalty, which sounds like the most generous version yet of the series' turn rewind systems.

The Direct also dug into the tactical layer. Between tournament matches you explore Dagsion, the capital city, using arenas, shops, temples and inns to prepare your roster under a time limit. Each hero carries Blaze Arts, signature moves that burn their own health for a big battlefield swing. Classes come in three tiers, from five beginner classes through more than ten specialty ones like armored knights and wing soldiers, up to advanced options including cataphracts and elephant riders.

Our take

This is the most interesting a Fire Emblem premise has sounded in years. Four short campaigns that feed a fifth, with time travel stitching them together, is a structure with real ambition, and the reveal was genuinely well hidden. Nintendo says select tracks hit Nintendo Music today and an Ask the Developer interview lands September 15, so the drip feed continues. Six weeks out, Fortune's Weave just became a much easier game to be excited about.
