Game Code Says Invalid or Expired? 9 Causes and Fixes

A rejected code feels like a verdict on the code, but the message is often about something else: your spelling, your account, your game version. The fastest way to fix a failed redemption is to go through the likely causes in order, starting with the cheapest to check.

The quick causes: expiry, typos, case and hidden spaces

1. The code has expired. Developers retire codes without warning, sometimes within days. This is the single most common reason, and it is the one nothing can fix. If the code is on the expired list on its game page, stop there and look for a newer one.

2. A look-alike character. A capital letter O and a zero, a lowercase l and a capital I, a lowercase l and the digit 1 are easy to swap when you type. Copy and paste instead of typing.

3. Case. Many codes are case sensitive. We checked the working codes on our pages today: about 66 percent are written in capitals only, about 43 percent contain at least one digit, and about 19 percent mix upper and lower case. For that last group, one wrong capital means a rejected code. Treat the capitalization on the page as part of the code.

4. A hidden space. Copying from a chat message, a social media post or a page that formats codes can drag a space or a line break along with the code. Many games reject it silently. Paste, then press backspace once to see whether a trailing space was hiding there, and retype the last character.

The account causes: one use, level gates and wrong platform

5. Already redeemed. A code is normally good once per account. If you used it earlier, even weeks ago, the game says it has already been redeemed, sometimes with a wording that reads like a generic error.

6. A level or progress gate. Some games only accept codes after the tutorial, or past a minimum level. A brand new account is the classic case: the code is fine and the account is not ready.

7. The wrong platform or server. A few codes are limited to one platform, one region or one server, and mobile games with several servers sometimes need the code redeemed on the right one. If a friend on another platform has the same error as you, this is the likely cause.

The technical causes: limits and old builds

8. The redemption limit was reached. Some codes are limited to a number of redemptions across all players. The message usually says the code has reached its limit. There is no fix, and it is the reason fresh codes are worth redeeming quickly.

9. An outdated game version. A code added after an update can be rejected by a build that has not received it. Update the game, restart it, and try again. For web redemption pages, a refresh and a second attempt sometimes clears a temporary error.

When to report the code instead

If you have copied the code exactly, the code is listed as active, your account meets the requirements and the game is up to date, you have probably found a code that died before our next check. That happens: codes can end faster than any list can follow. Send us the game and the code through the contact page. We re-check it against our sources and move it to the expired list if it is dead. Reader reports are among the fastest signals we get.

FAQ

How can I tell whether a code is expired or I made a mistake?

Check the game's page on our site first. If the code sits in the expired list, it is gone. If it is listed as active, copy it with the copy button instead of typing it, because a typing slip is the most common mistake when the code is still valid.

Are game codes case sensitive?

Often they are. In the working codes we list today, about 19 percent mix upper and lower case and about 43 percent contain a digit, so the exact form matters. Copy and paste rather than retyping.

Why does a code work for my friend and not for me?

The usual reasons are an account that already redeemed it, a level or tutorial requirement on a new account, or a different platform or server. Codes are normally one use per account.

What should I do if a code listed as working still fails everywhere?

Report it through our contact page with the game and the code. We re-check it against our sources and move it to the expired list if it no longer works.
