Halo: Campaign Evolved Launches Tomorrow on Xbox, PC and PS5, After a Rocky Early Access Week
We grew up replaying the Silent Cartographer, so tomorrow is a strange kind of milestone for us. On July 28 at 8:00 AM PDT, Halo: Campaign Evolved launches worldwide on Xbox Series X|S, PC and, for the first time in the series' history, PlayStation 5. It lands day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and if you pre-loaded, you are ready to go the moment the clock hits.
The launch matters well beyond nostalgia. This is the full Combat Evolved campaign rebuilt from the ground up, and it is also the moment Master Chief officially walks onto a PlayStation console. That alone makes tomorrow one of the biggest release days of the year.

What you actually get at launch
According to the official rundown on Halo Waypoint, the package is more than a coat of paint. You get the rebuilt Combat Evolved campaign, a set of brand new recon missions called Operation: METEORITE, 42 hidden skulls to chase, and a Campaign Remix mode that shakes up encounters for replays. Co-op is generous by modern standards: two player split screen on consoles, plus four player cross platform online co-op, so an Xbox player, a PS5 player and two PC friends can clear the ring together.
Buyers of the Premium and Collector's Editions have had a head start since July 23, when up to five days of early access opened at 8:00 AM PDT. Everyone else, including Game Pass subscribers, joins on the 28th. If you are on PS5 with the Standard Edition, pre-loading has been open since July 26.
The early access week has been bumpy
Here is the part we cannot skip over. The early access period has not gone smoothly, and the game sits at a Mixed rating on Steam with more than two thousand reviews at the time of writing. The recurring complaints are less about the remake itself and more about everything around it: a mandatory Microsoft sign in even for solo play, server queues and crashes when that sign in fails, and cutscenes locked at 30 frames per second. For a single player campaign, needing a working server connection to start the fight is a hard thing to defend.
The frustrating thing is that the underlying remake looks strong. Critics who played ahead of launch have generally praised the rebuilt combat and visuals, and the co-op options are exactly what this campaign always deserved. Our advice for launch day is simple: if you have Game Pass, there is zero risk in jumping in tomorrow and judging the state of it yourself. If you are paying full price, especially on PS5, it may be worth watching how the first post launch days go before you commit. The Pillar of Autumn has waited nearly 25 years to land on new shores, and it can wait one more week if the servers wobble.
