Minecraft Finally Goes Native on Switch 2 October 27, With Vibrant Visuals Turned On by Default

Here is a slightly absurd fact: the best selling video game of all time has spent the Switch 2's entire first year running as a backward compatible copy of a port built for 2017 hardware. That finally ends on October 27, when Mojang ships a true native version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement went up on the official Minecraft site this week, and Nintendo confirmed the date on its own newsroom, so this one is locked in.

The headline feature is Vibrant Visuals, the engine-level graphics overhaul Mojang has been rolling out across Bedrock platforms. On Switch 2 it will not be a toggle buried in a settings menu. It is the default experience, which means enhanced lighting, proper shadow effects and a generally softer, more modern look the moment you load a world. Supported Minecraft Marketplace content gets the treatment too, so texture packs and worlds built with Vibrant Visuals in mind will render the way their creators intended.

What Vibrant Visuals does, and where it switches off

Mojang is being upfront about the limits, which we appreciate. Vibrant Visuals will not be available in every situation on Switch 2. Split-screen play drops back to the standard renderer, and certain Marketplace worlds and pieces of content are excluded as well. That is a sensible trade given the hardware is driving up to four players on one screen, but it is worth knowing before you promise the family a fully ray-lit couch session.

The bigger practical win for long-suffering Switch players may simply be performance. The original Switch version has carried years of complaints about load times and chug in busy worlds, and a build targeting the new hardware directly is the obvious fix. Minecraft joins a steady parade of games getting real Switch 2 versions this year, most recently Final Fantasy XIV, which landed on the console on August 4.

The Mario Mash-Up gets a glow up, and upgraders get a path

The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, the Nintendo-exclusive bundle with its custom Mario world, music and skins, is being updated to take full advantage of the new visuals. Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza rendered with modern lighting is a genuinely charming prospect, and it arrives in a nice bit of timing for Mario fans, with Super Mario Sunshine hitting Nintendo Classics on August 13.

If you already own Minecraft on the original Switch, you will not be starting from zero. A digital upgrade path for existing Switch players is confirmed, though neither company has said what it will cost. More details are promised before launch.

Our take: this is about two years later than it should have been for a console that launched with Minecraft as an obvious system seller. But Mojang shipping the overhauled renderer as the default, rather than an optional extra, suggests the wait produced a version actually built for the machine. October 27 is the date to circle.
