Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Gets Its First Full Look at Hajin
Call of Duty's extraction mode is coming back, and this week Infinity Ward finally showed how it works in practice. On October 5 the studio published a long guide to DMZ in Modern Warfare 4, covering the new Hajin Exclusion Zone, the home base you return to between runs, the enemies, and the vehicles. It is the clearest picture of the mode we have had since the first reveal in June, and with launch on October 23 there is not much time left to get ready.
If you have not followed DMZ so far, the idea is simple. You drop into a persistent open-world map, loot gear, complete objectives, fight both AI forces and other players, and try to extract with what you found. Lose the run and you lose what you carried. Activision calls it the definitive Call of Duty extraction shooter, which is a big claim, but the guide gives us real systems to judge it by.

How a run in Hajin works
Every deployment starts at the Forward Operating Base, or FOB. It begins small, with a handful of stations for managing your Operators, your stash and loadout, DMZ Orders, a firing range and survival kits. As you finish operations it grows into more than a dozen stations, including a 3D printer for crafting, a gunsmith, a rotating vendor and a boss board. DMZ also has its own progression track that runs to level 70, so this is a mode you build up over many sessions, not a single match type.
On the map, the guide pushes a balanced approach. Looting earns XP, but Activision says to mix looting with combat and objectives to reach an S-tier rating at the end of a deployment. Dynamic Operations give each run a goal and end with a supply drop whose loot gets better with each success in the same deployment, from common to uncommon to rare. Side operations are lower pressure: repairing trucks, climbing radio towers to find a nearby Lieutenant, or recovering lost drops.
The high-risk content is the boss layer. Lieutenants are tough targets with their own territories, and killing one drops a Dog Tag Case that shows on the map for every Operator. Picking it up broadcasts your position too, so the game is openly asking whether you want the reward badly enough to be hunted. Commanders roam the map as even tougher bosses, resistant to many standard weapons, and they drop the valuable 3D printer ingredients. The map itself lists 13 major locations, from a political prison and an air base to a nuclear reactor, a shopping mall and a stadium.
What it means before launch
The practical news for players is the timeline. Campaign Early Access starts October 16 for digital pre-orders of the Standard or Vault Edition, and the full game follows on October 23, which is 9 PM Pacific on October 22 for US players. A second DMZ guide covering every FOB station and progression to level 70 is due later this week, so the picture will get fuller before you spend money.
Our take: the structure sounds sturdier than we expected. A base that evolves, bosses with a real risk and reward trade, and a progression track with a hard ceiling are the ingredients that kept earlier extraction shooters alive. What we cannot judge yet is the balance. Loot economy, how punishing death feels, and how much the Vault Edition bonus shortens the early grind will only show up in real play. If you are on the fence, waiting for the second guide and the first week of impressions is a cheap way to avoid regret.
Two practical notes. The game does not run on Game Pass at launch and skips PS4 and Xbox One, so check your hardware first. And if Call of Duty is more of a nostalgia habit for you, our look at the Black Ops 1 and 2 PlayStation ports shows what the older games are like on current consoles.

FAQ
When does Modern Warfare 4 come out, and can I play the campaign early?
The game launches on October 23, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Players who digitally pre-order the Standard or Vault Edition get Campaign Early Access starting October 16. Activision notes that platform availability and start dates are subject to change.
Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass?
Not at launch. Activision's pre-order page says Modern Warfare 4 will not be available through Game Pass at launch, and the game is not coming to PS4 or Xbox One either.
Do I need to buy the Vault Edition to play DMZ?
Nothing in the official guide says DMZ is locked to a premium edition. The Vault Edition lists a DMZ Deployment Bonus as an extra, which reads as a head start rather than an entry ticket, but Activision has not spelled out the details.
What is the FOB in DMZ?
The Forward Operating Base is your hub between deployments. You manage Operators, your stash and loadout, orders and crafting there, and it grows into more than a dozen stations as you progress.
