Nintendo Books Two Directs Next Week: A Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on September 8 and a 45 Minute Nintendo Direct on September 9

Nintendo just put two dates on our calendar for next week, and one of them has Zelda's name on it. On Tuesday, September 8 at 7am PT, Nintendo airs The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, a presentation of approximately 30 minutes dedicated to the series. On Wednesday, September 9 at the same time, it follows up with Nintendo Direct 9.9.2026, a general show of approximately 45 minutes, with a Nintendo Treehouse: Live stream right after it showing gameplay of select titles from the Direct.

That is 75 minutes of official Nintendo programming across two mornings, which is about as busy as the company gets outside of June. The announcement went out on September 4 through the Nintendo Today app and Nintendo's social channels, and the official Nintendo Direct page already lists both events with the artwork you see above.

The schedule and where to watch

Both presentations start at 7am PT. For everyone else, that is 10am ET, 3pm in the UK, 4pm in central Europe and 11pm in Japan. The Zelda Direct is the shorter one at roughly half an hour on Tuesday, and the general Direct is the longer one at roughly 45 minutes on Wednesday. Nintendo streams its Directs on its official YouTube channels, and the Nintendo Direct page on nintendo.com is the place to bookmark if you want the archive afterwards.

The Treehouse: Live segment only follows the Wednesday show. Nintendo describes it as gameplay of select titles featured during the Nintendo Direct, which is the usual format: developers and Nintendo staff playing extended sections of games that only got a trailer minutes earlier. Nintendo has not announced a start time or duration for that stream, so expect it to begin whenever the Direct wraps.

Nintendo's own wording for the Zelda show is deliberately vague. The company says it will deliver a variety of information related to The Legend of Zelda to mark the 40th anniversary, and that is the whole official description. It has said nothing at all about what is in the Wednesday Direct beyond the runtime.

What we know is on Nintendo's plate

We will keep the speculation honest and stick to what Nintendo has already committed to publicly. The biggest open item is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2. Nintendo's official store page still describes it as returning in 2026, reborn exclusively for Switch 2, with no firm release date. A dedicated 30 minute anniversary show with less than four months left in the year is exactly where we would expect that date to land, along with a proper look at the game, which Nintendo has so far kept very brief. Nintendo is also making a live-action Zelda film, so a mention of it would not surprise us either.

On the general Direct side, Nintendo has a fair amount of 2026 Switch 2 business still undated or barely shown. FromSoftware's The Duskbloods is still listed only as 2026, and we covered its closed network test back in August, which usually means a launch is not far off. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave lands on September 17 and already had its own dedicated Direct in August, so we would expect only a quick reminder there. Beyond that, a 45 minute slot in September has historically been where Nintendo lays out its holiday lineup and drops a surprise or two. We would rather wait for Wednesday than guess at names.

Our take

Splitting Zelda into its own show is the interesting move. Nintendo did the same thing for Fire Emblem last month, and it tends to do this when a single game has enough to show that it would swallow a general Direct. If Tuesday's presentation is mostly Ocarina of Time with a date attached, that alone justifies the slot for us. Set two alarms, and we will have both recaps up as soon as the streams end.
