Onimusha: Way of the Sword Sold Over 1 Million Copies on Launch Day, and the Series Just Crossed 10 Million
We wondered on Friday whether a series that had been quiet for two decades still had an audience. Capcom answered that on Monday. In a press release dated September 7, the publisher said worldwide sales of Onimusha: Way of the Sword surpassed 1 million units on launch day, September 4, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The same release says the milestone pushed cumulative sales of the whole Onimusha series past 10 million units.
That second number is the one that made us do the math. Capcom's own figure for the series as of March 31, 2026 was 9.1 million, covering every game since the 2001 original. So one new entry moved the franchise total by roughly a tenth in a single day, and the launch day alone accounts for more than a tenth of everything Onimusha has ever sold. Capcom does not break the million down by platform or split physical from digital, so we cannot tell you where the sales came from, only that they happened fast.

How Capcom says it got here
The press release credits the result to marketing work done before launch, specifically "multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions" that expanded awareness among what it calls a broad range of users. That matches what we saw from the outside. The demo was the reason Capcom gave in July when it pulled the release date forward from September 25 to September 4, three weeks early, which is a direction release dates almost never move. Then the game took Best Gameplay and Best PlayStation Game at the gamescom awards in late August, and it arrived on launch day with an 85 on Metacritic, which we covered in our launch story.
Capcom also framed the number as part of a wider plan. Alongside its yearly major releases, the company says it is focusing on "re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently," and Onimusha is the clearest test of that idea so far. A Miyamoto Musashi swordplay game set in an Edo-era Kyoto overrun by Genma demons is not an obvious blockbuster on paper. It was a 20 year old name with a loyal but aging fanbase, and the company just proved that a well-made revival of that kind of series can open like a much bigger one.
What this means if you are still deciding
For anyone on the fence, the practical parts have not changed. On Steam the standard edition is $69.99, and the Early Adopter Bonus, which turned into a soft deadline when the launch moved, still runs through September 25 or September 26 depending on your time zone. It adds the Lion Dog and White Monkey charms plus the Sealed Curse and White Lion sword appearances, all cosmetic, so nobody is locked out of anything that matters by waiting.
The number that matters more for the long run is what a million day-one sales does to Capcom's plans. The game is on the lineup for the Capcom Spotlight broadcast on September 16, which is the first natural place for post-launch news, and a revived series that opens this strongly usually gets support rather than a quiet fade. Capcom has not announced any DLC or expansion, and we are not going to guess at one. What we will say is that the padding criticism from reviews, the one recurring complaint about side content, is now the thing most worth fixing, and the publisher has every commercial reason to keep working on this game.
Our honest take is that this is the best possible outcome for a project that was always a gamble. A million copies on day one for a series revival, on top of a warm critical reception, gives Capcom a template it will surely reuse, and it gives players a reason to expect more of these comebacks. If you have been waiting for Onimusha to feel like a going concern again instead of a nostalgia act, it does now.
