Xbox Will Publish Hideo Kojima's Physint After PlayStation Walked Away in June, and the Deal Stretches Into Film and TV
Some partnerships in this industry feel permanent until the day they are not. Hideo Kojima and PlayStation have been tied together since the first Metal Gear Solid, and Sony published both Death Stranding games, so we did not expect to write this sentence: Physint, the action espionage game Kojima revealed on a PlayStation State of Play stage in January 2024, is now an Xbox project. Xbox and Kojima Productions made it official on September 9, and the story behind it is messier than the press release lets on.
The Xbox Wire post is short and warm. Asha Sharma, the Xbox CEO, said that "creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life" and that Xbox is "honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT." Kojima, in the same post, said the deal "expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD" and that the studio remains "committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world." Beyond the two games, the agreement also covers film and television collaborations. What the post does not include is just as notable: no platforms, no release window, no exclusivity language and no mention of Game Pass.
PlayStation cancelled it in June, Kojima Productions says
The reason a PlayStation project turned into an Xbox one came from Kojima Productions itself, in a statement posted on its X account alongside the announcement. The studio says that in mid-June of this year it "unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project." Kojima called Physint "an important project both to me personally and to Kojima Productions," and the studio says it spent three months searching for a new partner before settling on Xbox, which it describes as "a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future."
PlayStation responded the same evening, US time, with its own post on X. "After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT," the statement reads, adding that Sony continues "to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game." No reason was given, and the wording is softer than "cancel." Both versions can be true at once: Sony decided to stop funding the game, and the studio that was making it experienced that as a cancellation. Either way, a project that was supposed to be one of PlayStation's prestige exclusives, with Columbia Pictures attached for a film side from the start, left the building without Sony ever showing a second of it.
What Physint actually is, and what Xbox is buying
Physint is still a working title, and what exists publicly is thin. At the January 2024 reveal, Kojima described a new original action espionage game, a return to the genre he defined with Metal Gear, built as a game and film hybrid. At Kojima Productions' Beyond the Strand event in September 2025, the studio showed the first poster, a man in a long coat with a rifle under the tagline "Here Comes the Feeling," and named three supporting cast members: Charlee Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe. The lead has not been announced, and there is no gameplay, no trailer and no date. Kojima Productions is also still finishing OD, the horror project with Jordan Peele that Xbox has been publishing since it was announced.
For Xbox, the timing is the interesting part. The company spent the summer cutting studios in its biggest restructure ever, then pivoted to talking about affordability and a family of Helix devices rather than one console. Signing the industry's most famous auteur, with a game Sony had already paid to start, is a cheap way to look like a place creators want to be, which is exactly what Sharma's quote is designed to say. Whether Physint ends up on PS5 anyway, the way several Xbox published games have, is the question Xbox pointedly did not answer.
Our take
We are glad the game survived, and a little uneasy about how. Sony walking away from a Kojima project it announced with fanfare says something about how tightly PlayStation is now managing its budget, and Kojima Productions going public with the word "cancel" says something about how that conversation went. For players, the honest summary is that Physint exists, it has a publisher again, and everything else, including where you will play it and when, is still a blank page. We will not pretend otherwise until Xbox shows something.

FAQ
Is Physint still coming to PS5?
Nobody has said either way. The September 9 announcement names Xbox as publisher but lists no platforms, no release window and no exclusivity terms. PlayStation Studios says it has stepped away from the project, so a PS5 version would now depend on what Xbox decides, and Xbox has published some of its games on PlayStation in recent years.
Why did PlayStation drop Physint?
PlayStation has not given a reason. Its statement says only that it made the difficult decision to step away after careful consideration and that it still admires Hideo Kojima's vision for the game. Kojima Productions says the cancellation notice arrived unexpectedly in mid-June 2026.
What is Physint?
Physint is a working title for a new action espionage game from Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions, first revealed on a PlayStation State of Play in January 2024. A poster and three supporting cast members, Charlee Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe, were shown at the studio's Beyond the Strand event in September 2025. No gameplay has been shown.
What else are Xbox and Kojima Productions working on?
OD, the horror project Kojima Productions is making with Xbox and filmmaker Jordan Peele, was already an Xbox published game. The new agreement adds Physint and says the two companies will also collaborate on film and television.
