Ditto's little utopia is doing big numbers. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company announced this week that Pokémon Pokopia has passed five million copies sold worldwide, physical and digital combined, just over four months after the game launched on March 5. That is a serious milestone for a spin-off with no battles, no badges and no rival waiting at the edge of town, just a shapeshifting Ditto with a hammer and a to-do list.

We will admit we did not expect the cozy one to become a system seller. Yet here we are, and the trajectory tells the story better than the headline figure does.

How fast five million happened

The pace has been remarkably steady for a game everyone filed under "nice little side project" when it was revealed. Pokopia moved 2.2 million copies in its first four days, cleared 4 million in a little over a month, and has now settled into the kind of long tail most launches would kill for. Keep in mind this is a Switch 2 exclusive, so every one of those copies was sold on a console that has only been on shelves since last year. Run the rough math against Nintendo's hardware numbers and somewhere around one in five Switch 2 owners has a Ditto renovating a village right now.

The game comes from Game Freak working alongside Koei Tecmo, and by several counts it is now the biggest seller Koei Tecmo has ever had a hand in, nudging past Fire Emblem: Three Houses. For a studio best known for armies of a thousand enemies on one screen, a watering can turning out to be the deadliest weapon is a fun twist.

Why it keeps selling, and what comes next

Part of the answer is simple availability: Pokopia headlined the Switch 2 summer hardware bundles, which put the game in the box during the console's biggest sales window of the year so far. The other part is that Nintendo has kept feeding it. The free Ver. 2.0.0 update handed every player Manaphy and the Dive move at no cost, while the paid Bubbly Basin expansion opened an underwater town on August 5. Part 2 of the Expansion Pass is due late this year and Part 3 brings another new town in 2027, so the roadmap stretches well into next year.

Our take: five million in four months is not just a good result, it is Nintendo proving the Animal Crossing audience and the Pokémon audience overlap almost perfectly when someone finally builds the bridge. The one thing we would keep an eye on is whether the paid expansions can keep the momentum going once the free updates slow down. So far, though, the slow life is winning fast.
