Rainbow Six Tactics Turns Siege Into a Single Player Turn-Based Game, With No In-Game Store

For a decade, Rainbow Six has meant one thing: a live-service shooter where a single headshot ends the round. So when Ubisoft closed its Gamescom Opening Night Live segment with a Rainbow Six game that has no aiming, no store and no multiplayer at all, we had to double-check we heard it right. Rainbow Six Tactics is a fully single-player, turn-based tactics game, and it launches in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Ubisoft Store, Steam and the Epic Games Store, with GeForce Now and Blacknut streaming along for the ride.

The premise flips the series camera upward. Instead of playing one operator, you are Six, the commander of the whole Rainbow organization, working from headquarters as a new global conspiracy pushes armed groups into action around the world. You read the intelligence, pick a squad of up to four operators, and decide on the plan before anyone kicks a door.

Siege's toolbox, one turn at a time

The roster is where Siege players will feel at home. Tactics ships with 15 operators pulled from Siege's ranks, and the reveal showed familiar faces like Ash, Doc, Montagne, Sledge, Twitch, Glaz and Nokk, each with their signature gadgets, unique abilities and their own skill trees. Missions span more than 45 locations worldwide and cover classic Rainbow work: hostage rescues, bomb disposal and target elimination, with base upgrades and operator training filling the time between deployments.

The headline system is Breach Planning mode, which lets you queue up coordinated actions across your whole squad and then watch a synchronized assault play out, shields up and walls exploding. Destruction, the thing that makes Siege feel like Siege, carries over too, so chewing a new entry point through a wall remains a legitimate tactic even when the action is turn-based. The story sits inside Siege's own timeline and was built with that game's lore team, so this is canon, not a side experiment.

No store, no battle pass, no excuses

The most surprising line of the reveal was not a feature, it was a business decision. Ubisoft says Tactics will have no extra monetization at all: no in-game store, no live-service structure, just a complete single-player game developed at Ubisoft Paris by a team that includes veterans of Mario + Rabbids, the studio's best turn-based work to date. After years of every big franchise sprouting a storefront, a Tom Clancy game promising none is genuinely refreshing.

It also lands at the right moment. Turn-based tactics is having a real year, with Star Wars Zero Company bringing the genre to the Clone Wars just today, and Ubisoft is clearly in a mood to revisit its Tom Clancy catalog after confirming a new Ghost Recon earlier this month. Our take: 2027 is a long wait and turn-based spin-offs live or die on mission design, not nostalgia. But XCOM has needed a serious challenger for years, and a studio with the Mario + Rabbids pedigree, Siege's gadgets and zero monetization pressure is the most credible one we have seen in a long time.
