STALKER 2: Cost of Hope Is Out Now, and the Free Update 2.0 Might Be the Real Star
The wait is over for stalkers. Cost of Hope, the first major expansion for STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, launched today on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5, and it finally opens the two areas the series has teased for almost twenty years, the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Iron Forest. The expansion costs 29.99 dollars or euros on its own, and anyone who owns the Ultimate Edition or the Season Pass gets it automatically.
We covered the setup when GSC first dated the expansion back in July, and the finished product matches that pitch. This is a nonlinear storyline GSC says can take dozens of hours, starring base game protagonist Skif alongside series veteran Zulu and a new character named Mavka. The story runs in parallel with the main campaign rather than after it: a mysterious PDA signal pulls Skif into rising tensions between Duty and Freedom, two factions supposedly bound together by the D4 Treaty, a pact signed by every group in the Zone.

You can jump straight into the expansion
One smart touch: you do not need an old save or a finished campaign. After installing the DLC, GSC has added shortcuts to the main menu that skip you directly to the expansion content. Early Start places you where the first part of the DLC opens up, shortly after leaving the Lesser Zone, while Advanced Start jumps to a later point where both parts are available, with a choice of Spark or Ward for the faction decisions the main story has already made by then. GSC recommends Advanced Start for players who mostly care about the new content, and since the world stays open, you can wander off the DLC path whenever the Zone calls.
Update 2.0 is free, and it is enormous
The other half of today's release costs nothing. Update 2.0, subtitled Back to the Zone, lands for every owner of STALKER 2 and moves the game to Unreal Engine 5.5.4, with improved lighting, shadows and reflections and reworked landscape and foliage on top. The A-Life simulation gets a meaningful pass too: stalkers and mutants now contest campfires and points of interest, loot fallen bodies whether you are watching or not, and generally behave like the Zone exists without you.
Then there is the gear. Three types of binoculars arrive at last, the FOB-45, Yastrub and Fighter, alongside four new weapons, the Arev assault rifle, the GP3A and SKP marksman rifles and the Fora-230 SMG, plus new scopes for both Western and Eastern weapon families. A fog system, reworked rainy weather, a Custom Rules difficulty, new spots in Prypiat and over 500 bug fixes round out the list.
Our take: this is how you support a game that launched rough. The paid expansion will get the headlines, but an engine upgrade and an A-Life overhaul given away free to every owner is the part that rebuilds trust, and it makes today a good day to head back to the Zone even if you never touch the DLC.
