PlayStation Books a Double Feature: State of Play on September 3, With State of Play Japan Airing Right After

Gamescom wrapped barely a day ago, and Sony is already claiming the next slot on the calendar. The company confirmed this morning that State of Play returns this Thursday, September 3, and that it is not coming alone: a second broadcast, State of Play Japan, airs immediately after the main show.

Both streams start at 6:00am PT / 9:00am ET / 3:00pm CEST / 10:00pm JST on PlayStation's YouTube and Twitch channels. Sony has not said how long either show runs, but the structure alone makes this one of the meatier PlayStation broadcasts in a while.

What each show covers

The main State of Play promises updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and third party partners, and Sony already spoiled the finale: an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation from Square Enix. That is a deliberate mic drop. The closing chapter of the Remake trilogy showed up at Gamescom with a trailer full of awakened Weapons and a Spring 2027 window, and an extended segment suggests Square Enix is ready to show real gameplay, or maybe finally pin the season to a date. The show airs in English with Japanese subtitles available.

State of Play Japan is the more intriguing half for us. Hosted by voice actor Yuki Kaji, it promises deep dives into upcoming games from studios in Japan and Asia, with new gameplay and fresh announcements. It airs in Japanese with English subtitles. The format has appeared before, but pairing it directly with a main State of Play is new, and it gives regional projects a stage they usually have to share.

What we expect

Sony only guarantees the Final Fantasy VII Revelation segment, so everything else is guesswork, but the timing invites it. September broadcasts traditionally set up the holiday lineup, and there is no shortage of candidates from the region: Capcom's Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches the very next day, and October's Phantom Blade Zero already got its own dedicated deep dive in August, so its studio clearly has Sony's ear.

Our honest read: double length shows usually mean Sony has more confirmed material than one broadcast can hold, and putting the Revelation segment at the end of show one is a classic trick to carry viewers into show two. We would keep expectations measured on surprise megatons, but as a way to spend a Thursday morning coffee, two PlayStation shows back to back is an easy yes.
