The wait between Midnight's launch content and its first real expansion of the world ends this week. Curse of Ula'tek, patch 12.1, goes live on August 11 in North America and August 12 in Europe, and Blizzard has now published the full patch notes, so we finally know exactly what ships on day one and what stays locked for another week.

The short version: the new Coiled Isle zone, the three boss Altar of Fangs dungeon, new Delves and the brand new Lair encounters all open with the patch. The eight boss raid, The Venomous Abyss, waits for Midnight Season 2 on August 18, which is also when the new dungeon joins the Mythic+ rotation.

What's waiting on the Coiled Isle

The story picks up right where Midnight's troll thread left off. The fog has lifted from a mysterious island off the east coast of Zul'Aman, and Zul'jarra sets out after her brother Zul'jan, hoping to bring him and his followers home. What she finds instead is Ula'tek, an ancient serpent of hatred, corruption and venom that Zul'jan's actions have unleashed on the world.

That confrontation ends in The Venomous Abyss, the eight boss raid with Ula'tek as its final encounter. Until it opens on August 18, the day one menu is still generous: the Coiled Isle itself with its campaign chapters, the Altar of Fangs dungeon at up to Mythic 0 difficulty, and three new Delves, including Venomfall Deeps, a new Nemesis Delve. The Xal'atath storyline also continues with Arator, so the expansion's bigger arc keeps moving in the background.

Lairs might be the sleeper feature

The addition we find most interesting is not the raid. Lairs are a new instance type that takes the old world boss formula, gives each boss its own instance and summoning stone, and lets the difficulty scale all the way up to a flexible Mythic mode for 15 to 25 players. World bosses have been a five minute weekly errand for over a decade, so turning them into an actual organized activity with a real difficulty curve is the kind of structural change that could outlive this patch.

The rest of the update is quality of life in the best sense. Player housing gets blueprint import and export, so you can share a finished home layout instead of screenshots, plus pet beds and four new Endeavors. The interface picks up cooldown tracking improvements and an expanded ping system for calling out spells and health in a group.

It is a busy Tuesday for Blizzard all around, since Overwatch's new season with its freshly revealed hero D.Mon lands on August 11 too. As for Curse of Ula'tek, our take is simple: the raid week split means there is no rush, but the Coiled Isle campaign, the new Delves and a first look at Lairs are a solid week one even before Season 2 raises the stakes.
