Xbox Backward Compatibility Arrives on PC, Four Original Xbox Classics Playable Now

Some of us grew up passing a Duke controller around during Fuzion Frenzy nights, so today's news hits a soft spot. Xbox just launched Backward Compatibility on PC, and for the first time ever, original Xbox games are officially playable on Windows machines and PC handhelds.

The early release starts with four classics: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. All four are available today on Windows 11 PCs, plus handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, with Xbox Cloud Gaming support on top.

Your old licenses carry over

This is the part we like most. If you already own any of these games digitally on console, that license now works on PC and handhelds at no extra cost, through Xbox Play Anywhere. All four titles are also included in every Xbox Game Pass plan, and each one can be purchased individually on PC if you never owned them.

These are not bare ports either. The PC versions add up to 4x resolution upscaling, VSync, fullscreen and windowed modes, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, and customizable language and audio settings. The system requirements are gentle: a GTX 950 class GPU, a four core CPU, 8 GB of RAM and Windows 11 with recent drivers.

Achievements are coming later this year

One thing is missing at launch. Achievements are not live yet for these four games, but Xbox VP Jason Ronald confirmed they will be added in the coming months, with full Achievement support for select original Xbox titles arriving on both console and PC later in 2026.

Microsoft frames this as the start of a broader preservation effort, committing to keep games from four generations of Xbox playable and to bring more classics to PC over time.

Our take

Four games is a modest start, and BLiNX plus Fuzion Frenzy will not headline anyone's backlog in 2026. But the plumbing matters more than the launch lineup here. License carryover, Game Pass inclusion, handheld support and real graphics options are exactly how a preservation program should work, and Crimson Skies alone is worth an evening of anyone's time. If Microsoft follows through with steady additions, especially the fan favorites still locked to console, this quietly becomes one of the best things Xbox has done for PC players in years. We just hope the rollout moves faster than four games at a time.
