Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct Recap: Ocarina of Time Lands November 5 at $59.99, a Triforce Switch 2 Arrives October 29, and the Movie Gets Its Date

Nintendo spent its 30 minute Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on exactly the game everyone expected, and it did not waste the time. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026, at $59.99 for the digital version and $69.99 for the physical one. Pre-orders opened right after the show, and Nintendo says the early physical run comes with a textured foil cover while supplies last.

Last week we previewed both September Directs and called the Ocarina of Time date the obvious candidate. It was, but the Direct went a lot further than a date. Nintendo showed real gameplay of the remake, a Triforce-themed Switch 2 console, two playable ocarinas, a worldwide concert tour and the release date of the live-action movie. Here is what was actually confirmed.

What the remake actually changes

This is a rebuild rather than a resolution bump. Nintendo lists completely overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes with expanded character dialogue, a symphonic orchestral score and reworked camera and movement controls. Link can now jump and run with dedicated button commands, and the camera moves freely on the right stick in fully remodeled locations. The day and night cycle now runs continuously everywhere instead of stopping inside towns and dungeons, which was one of the original game's oldest quirks. A new Threads of Time menu tracks your story progress and current objectives, so nobody has to remember which temple comes after the Water Temple.

The ocarina itself is the showpiece feature. Hum one of Link's learned melodies near the Switch 2's built-in microphone and he plays it in-game. Nintendo also confirmed the game responds to real instruments, and it is selling two of them later in 2026: a playable ocarina and a HORI electric ocarina that plays notes and full songs at the press of a button. Producer Eiji Aonuma gave a separate gameplay demonstration on Nintendo's channel, and the Zelda Notes app is getting Ocarina of Time support with location challenges, a virtual ocarina and a quiz with more than 2,000 questions. Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo follow in 2027 and unlock retro-style masks in the game.

The hardware, the merchandise and the movie

A week before the game, on October 29, Nintendo releases the Nintendo Switch 2 The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition system, alongside an anniversary Pro Controller sold with or without a display stand and a carrying case with a screen protector. All of it carries a Triforce design. Two things Nintendo did not say: the prices of any of that hardware, and whether the console includes the game. Nothing in the announcement mentions a bundled copy, so treat the system as a themed console rather than a game bundle until Nintendo says otherwise.

Spring 2027 brings the partner products: a LEGO Ocarina of Time Link and Epona set with 1,750 pieces, and a Hasbro electronic Master Sword that measures 27 inches and packs more than 15 sound effects. A 40th anniversary concert series tours in 2027 too, starting in Tokyo in January, then Chicago in February, London in April and Melbourne in May, with tickets handled through gameconcerts.com. The Nintendo Museum in Kyoto adds Zelda ticket designs and photo spots on November 5 and a themed restaurant this fall.

The other headline is the film. The Legend of Zelda, produced by Nintendo with Arad Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment, opens in theaters on April 30, 2027. Nintendo revealed the official logo, and Shigeru Miyamoto explained that the movie is an original work inspired by the series, which is why it carries no subtitle. No footage was shown.

Our take

For a 40th anniversary show, this was tightly focused, and we think that was the right call. One game, one date, one console and a clear list of everything around it beats a scattershot of teases. The jump button and the free camera will be divisive with purists, but the humming mechanic is the kind of hardware-specific idea Nintendo does better than anyone. The gaps are real, though: no hardware prices, no word on Twilight Princess or a new mainline Zelda, and no movie footage.
