Aang and Korra finally share a fighting game, and it arrived today with a plot twist nobody ordered. Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game launched on July 23 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam for $29.99. Xbox players, however, learned just hours before the unlock time that their version now lands on September 3.

What launched today

Developed by Gameplay Group and published by PM Studios in partnership with Paramount, this is a 1v1 fighter built on hand-drawn 2D animation that stays close to the look of the shows. The launch roster covers 12 fighters drawn from both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, including Aang, Korra, Zuko, Azula, Zaheer and Kyoshi, with more characters planned through a post-launch roadmap.

Beyond versus play, the game ships with a story mode, arcade mode, training, spectator support and an art gallery. The netcode is the headline feature for fighting game fans: proprietary rollback plus cross-play across platforms. One caveat worth knowing before you buy on Switch, that version launches without cross-play and only supports English at first. The studios say both are coming in future updates.

The Xbox delay, announced at the worst possible moment

The delay statement went up on the game's official X account shortly before the game was set to unlock, moving the Xbox Series X|S release to September 3 because of what the studios called unforeseen circumstances on a backend feature. Pre-orders on Xbox are not being cancelled automatically, they simply carry over to the new date, which has understandably annoyed players who expected to spend launch day bending fire instead of requesting refunds.

A Switch 2 version is also on the way later in 2026, separate from the standard Switch release that shipped today.

Our take

A $29.99 price, rollback netcode and hand-drawn animation is a genuinely appealing package for a licensed fighter, and the Avatar license has been waiting a long time for a real fighting game. But announcing a six-week delay hours before launch is rough, and leaving pre-orders in place by default puts the burden on Xbox players to go get their own refunds. If you are on PS5 or PC, this looks like an easy one to try. If you are on Xbox, the wait until September 3 at least comes with the benefit of six more weeks of balance patches landing before you touch it.
