Fallout 76's Native PS5 and Xbox Series Update Lands Today With The Slasher, a Multi Week Murder Mystery, and the First Legacy Season

Almost six years after the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launched, Fallout 76 finally gets a version built for them. The free update Bethesda calls The Slasher rolls out today, September 15, and it carries what the studio has been calling the Gen 9 boost: better performance, stability and visual fidelity on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, with older consoles picking up improvements too. Bethesda has not published resolution or frame rate figures, so we are not going to guess at them. What it did say is that the new console build gives the team room to optimize each platform separately from here on.

The same download also opens Season 26, Beware the Blood Moon, and starts a Halloween story that Bethesda describes as a first of its kind for the game. For those still holding out on the series in general, Bethesda's roadmap note this summer confirmed the Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters are real, so Appalachia is not the only place the franchise is headed.

A murder mystery that unfolds over several weeks

The headline content is The Slasher, and Bethesda is structuring it differently from its usual seasonal event. Someone has taken up the name of the Pint-Sized Slasher, a pre-war serial killer from Fallout lore, and gathered a cadre of fanatics who are now infesting the map. Rather than dropping the whole thing at once, the studio says the intensity builds in layers as new content unlocks across its fall updates. Breaking News broadcasts deliver fresh leads as the weeks go on, and the investigation runs through Infestations of cultists, new Daily Ops challenges, and digging up unmarked graves while you chase clues about the killer's supposed return.

Eventually you get to confront the imposter, and Bethesda has been specific about what that pays out: a unique Power Armor set and a new melee weapon called the Super Slasher. The Season 26 scoreboard runs alongside all of this with its own horror themed rewards, and the ones Bethesda has shown so far include a Batty Skirt, a Blood Moon Power Armor paint, a Creepy Cultist Well for your camp and a Blood Moon Weather Control Station.

Legacy Seasons and the weapon crafting change

The quieter but longer lasting addition is Legacy Seasons. Starting with this update, one past season runs next to the current one, and the first pick is Armor Ace and the Power Patrol in Cold Steel from 2021. Both seasons draw from the same ticket pool, so you decide where your tickets go, and the Legacy Season lasts for the span of a full regular season. Legacy rewards have to be claimed in order, anything you earned back in 2021 is automatically marked as claimed, a few new items were added that were not in the original run, and the old gameboards themselves are not coming back since Bethesda treats them as proof you were there the first time. The plan is to rotate through past seasons, so Cold Steel will return eventually, but Bethesda warns it may be a while.

Then there is unique weapon crafting. Workbenches can now change the Legendary mods on any of the 80 plus uniquely named weapons scattered across the wasteland, which is the change many long time players asked for most.

Our take

We would have liked hard numbers on the console upgrade, and their absence suggests the first pass is about stability rather than a flashy headline. Even so, a native current gen build after six years, a season structure that finally respects your old progress, and a story event with an actual arc is a strong month for a game plenty of people wrote off in 2018. If you have a Series X or PS5 gathering dust in the Fallout 76 department, this is the patch to reinstall for.
