Dying Light: The Beast Is Officially Cancelled on PS4 and Xbox One, Refunds Are Coming

If you have been holding onto a PS4 or Xbox One waiting for Dying Light: The Beast, you can stop waiting. Techland announced on July 14, through the official Dying Light account on X, that the last-gen versions of the game will never arrive. "After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision that Dying Light: The Beast will no longer be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One," the statement reads. The game itself is fine, and has been out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC since September 2025. It is the ten-month-old promise to older hardware that just died.

Why the old consoles got cut

Techland's explanation is blunt for a corporate statement. The Beast "was built from the ground up to take full advantage of current-generation hardware," and its open world, visuals, combat and traversal "depend on processing power and memory that previous-generation consoles simply cannot provide." As development on the ports went on, the studio says it became clear that squeezing the game onto 2013 hardware would require compromises that would prevent it from "delivering the experience we set out to create." Rather than ship something hollowed out, Techland killed the ports.

Refunds are on the table

The part that matters most if you spent money: anyone who pre-ordered or purchased The Beast expecting to play it on PS4 or Xbox One is eligible for a refund. Techland is directing affected players to the retailer or storefront where they bought the game, so start with your PlayStation or Microsoft order history, or the shop that sold you a boxed copy. Given how long these versions sat in limbo, we would not sit on that refund for another year.

Our take

Nobody should be shocked that a sprawling open-world zombie game from 2025 cannot run on consoles that launched in 2013. The honest criticism is not the cancellation, it is the timeline. The Beast grew out of planned Dying Light 2 content, was announced with last-gen versions on the roadmap, and shipped everywhere else ten months ago while PS4 and Xbox One owners were left checking for news. Waiting this long to say the quiet part out loud is rough on the people who paid early. Credit where due, though: the statement is clear, the refunds are unconditional, and cancelling is better than shipping a slideshow. If you have current-gen hardware, the game remains excellent, with very positive reviews on Steam. If you do not, at least you now have a straight answer, and your money back.
