Eight years to the day after the first Octopath Traveler landed on Switch, Square Enix used the series' anniversary to announce that both games are getting native Nintendo Switch 2 versions. They launch in the West on October 1, 2026, and if you are in Japan you can already download them today.

What the Switch 2 versions actually change

According to Square Enix, both HD-2D RPGs have been optimized for the new hardware with improved resolution and frame rate. That is the whole pitch, and honestly it is a sensible one. The originals ran at a modest resolution with visible dips in busy areas, and this art style is exactly the kind that benefits from a cleaner image.

Pre-orders are open now. Each game costs 59.99 dollars individually, digitally and physically, and there is a digital-only bundle with both games for 74.99 dollars. The series has shipped and sold more than 7 million copies worldwide since 2018, so Square Enix clearly sees an audience worth courting a second time.

The catches existing owners should know about

Here is the part we would want to know before spending anything. There is no upgrade path from the original Switch versions, and save data does not transfer. If you own either game already, your only route to the Switch 2 version is paying full price and starting over from the character select screen.

The physical versions are also game-key cards rather than full cartridges, so the games still download to your console and the card mostly acts as a launcher. Collectors who were hoping for the complete games on the card will want to know that before pre-ordering a box.

Our take

For newcomers this is an easy story. Two of the best turn-based RPGs on the platform, sharper and smoother, with a bundle that saves 45 dollars over buying both separately. If you skipped them the first time, October 1 is a good day to fix that.

For existing owners the math is much less kind. Sixty dollars per game for a resolution and frame rate bump, with your 80-hour save file left behind, is a hard sell in 2026 when plenty of publishers offer paid or even free upgrade tiers. We like these games a lot, and that is exactly why the no-upgrade decision feels stingy. Wait for the reviews to confirm how big the technical gains really are before double dipping.
