Final Fantasy Resonance's Free Demo Is Out on Every Platform: The Whole First Chapter, Saves That Carry Over, and a Sephiroth Fight to Find

A free demo that hands you the entire first chapter is a generous way to sell a game, and Square Enix did it on every platform at once. Final Fantasy Resonance's demo went live on September 3, right as the State of Play showcase was still running, on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Xbox on PC. Square Enix says it covers the game's opening through the first chapter, roughly three to five hours, and that your save data carries over to the full game when it launches on October 22, 2026.

We wanted to give it a couple of days before writing this up, mostly because "demo out on PS5" was the version of the story that made the rounds first. The bigger news for most people is that the Switch, Xbox and PC versions are all there too, and the same save promise applies everywhere.

What is in the demo, and the Sephiroth thing

The chapter you get is the start of a journey through the Kingdom of Grandshelt, and it is enough to see how the game actually plays. Resonance is the first HD-2D game in the series, the pixel art plus modern lighting look that Square Enix has been using for its Octopath games and remakes, and the combat is turn-based with what the publisher calls a modern twist. Sony's write-up of the demo goes a little further: you hit enemy weaknesses to stagger them, and instead of traditional jobs your party is customized with Visions, which are echoes of characters from earlier Final Fantasy games. Chocobos, espers and airships are all back, and Square Enix names Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light among the familiar faces who show up.

The headline reveal from the trailer is Sephiroth. Square Enix says players can find and challenge him, and beating him unlocks a special reward. The press release does not say whether that fight is reachable inside the demo's first chapter or only in the full game, so treat any claim you see about that as a guess until someone confirms it. If you want more of him, Final Fantasy VII Revelation is due April 8, 2027, but that is a very different kind of game.

One thing worth knowing before you get attached: Resonance is built on the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the 2016 mobile game. Square Enix is upfront that this is not a port and that it has been "refined and extensively rebuilt" as a console-quality RPG, with LANCARSE listed as co-developer alongside Square Enix on Steam. If you played Brave Exvius, expect to recognize the bones of the story.

Price, editions and our take

The full game launches October 22, 2026 on the same six storefronts as the demo. On Steam the standard edition is listed at $49.99, which is a friendlier number than most of this autumn's big releases, and there is a Digital Deluxe Edition that adds the Magitek and Grimoire Deluxe Pack of cosmetics and items. Pre-orders are open everywhere, and the Steam page also confirms the demo save carries over there, not just on PlayStation.

Our take is simple: this is the right way to do a demo. A full chapter, a real save that counts, and no platform left waiting. The risk for Square Enix is that three to five hours is long enough for people to decide the Brave Exvius story is not for them, but that is a fair trade for a game asking $49.99. If you have any interest in the HD-2D style, it costs you nothing to find out this weekend.
