Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Lands Wednesday on Switch 2 at $69.99 Digital and $79.99 Physical, and Nintendo Just Dropped a Seven Minute Overview Trailer

It has been more than three years since Fire Emblem Engage, and the wait ends this Wednesday. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave launches September 17 exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. On the US store the digital edition is $69.99, the physical edition is $79.99, and the Dagdan Collection, which adds a steelbook case, an artbook, character art cards and a map of Dagda, is $119.99.

To mark the final stretch, Nintendo published a seven minute overview trailer today, first in Japanese and then in English on the Nintendo of America channel. It does not reveal much that was not already shown across the two Directs, but it is the clearest single walkthrough of how the game is put together, so we are embedding it below.

Four heroes, one wish, and a rewind button

The setup is the Dagdan Empire, a prosperous land ruled by gods, where fighters from across the continent gather in the capital of Dagsion to compete in the Heroic Games. The prize is a single wish, and the four playable heroes each have a reason to want it. Cai is a boy trying to free his imprisoned father, Dietrich is a swordsman hunting for a stronger opponent, Theodora is a queen chasing her homeland's long held dream, and Leda is a musician out for revenge. You can play their stories in parallel rather than picking one route and committing, which is a real structural change from Three Houses.

The twist, which we covered when the August Direct revealed it, is that none of those four is the true protagonist. That role belongs to Eshmel, a customizable character who arrives after a time skip and rewinds the past to stop the demon god Balor. Nintendo's store description frames the whole game as travelling through time to gather allies and defeat Balor, so the tournament is the opening act, not the finale.

What the overview trailer actually shows

Battles are the familiar turn based, grid based tactics, with two new layers on top. Blaze Arts are powerful signature moves tied to the main characters that cost health to use, and Blessings are bonuses granted by the gods at temples. Between matches you explore Dagsion and the wider continent of Dagda, learn techniques at the training grounds, sit certification exams, recruit allies by handing out gifts and sharing meals, and delve dungeons where your team can chain attacks together. How you spend that free time is up to you, and the trailer leans hard on the idea that preparation is where the game is won or lost.

There is one Switch 2 specific feature worth knowing about. Fortune's Weave supports mouse controls using a Joy-Con 2, a first for the series, so you can use the controller as a mouse to move the cursor across the map. The game is single player only, supports TV, tabletop and handheld modes, is HDR compatible, and the US store lists a download of 29.5 GB. Nintendo also reiterated the September 17 date during the September 9 Direct, alongside the rest of its autumn lineup.

Our take

We have not seen final reviews as of writing, so treat the excitement around this one as informed rather than settled. Hands on impressions from August all landed on the same word, massive, and that cuts both ways in a series where the best entries are the focused ones. What we can say is that Nintendo is treating this as a proper tentpole, with two dedicated Directs, a collector's edition and a launch three days after a full overview trailer. If you want the physical edition, the $10 gap over digital is worth knowing before you preorder, and the Dagdan Collection is the only way to get the artbook and map.
