Fortnite's v42.10 Update Lands With OG Season X: The B.R.U.T.E. Is Back, Mega Man Is a Sprite, and Prop Hunt Comes to Battle Royale

Fortnite had a busy Thursday. The v42.10 update rolled out on September 3 and carried two stories at once: the Override season got its first big content drop since launch, and Fortnite OG moved on to Season X, the last season of Chapter 1. If you were around in 2019, you already know what that means. The mechs are back.

We read through both of Epic's official posts. Here is what actually changed on each island, plus the dates that matter this weekend.

OG Season X: a Reality Wave, a rebuilt Dusty Depot, and the B.R.U.T.E.

Epic's framing is "reality is bending, timelines are colliding." A Reality Wave has swept across the Chapter 1 island and left Rift Zones behind. Dusty Depot is whole again, three warehouses standing where the Meteor left off, and the Meteor itself now hangs in the sky. At Loot Lake, the Zero Point sits frozen at the moment of its explosion, and Epic says gravity stops playing by the rules near the orb. Northwest of Salty Springs, the Devourer's skeleton lies where it fell to Mecha Team Leader, a neat callback for anyone who watched Fortnite OG replay The Final Showdown last weekend.

Then there is the B.R.U.T.E. Mechs drop from the sky early in a match, and you race to the marker with a friend and climb in. One player drives, stomps and leaps while the other handles the missile launcher and shotgun, and the gunner can spend materials to overcharge the shield. If you would rather not get stomped, Epic points to the Automatic Sniper Rifle as the counter. The OG Season X Pass lets you earn XP anywhere in Fortnite to unlock three remixed outfits: Oxide, Ultima King and Kinetic Catalyst. Epic's post does not list a price, so we will not guess one.

Override gets a Sweeper Shotgun, new Loot Hacks and four new Sprites

On the main island, the Sweeper Shotgun returns "freshly tuned up for Override." It now fires in a standard spread instead of its old wide pattern, its reload can be interrupted as soon as shells are loaded, and it fires faster for the same damage, at the cost of a slightly smaller magazine and shorter range. Loot Hacks, the system that lets you spend Sprite Dust to shape what drops from Chests, got a fresh pool to unlock and customize. Epic also admitted the feature was producing "too many high-powered weapons too often," so hacked loot is now capped at Rare to Legendary rather than Epic to Mythic. Sprite Dust spent on a Loot Hack can be reset within its set but does not carry over to the next refresh.

Four new Sprites arrived. Overshield grants Overshield that scales with Sprite level, Mega Man reduces friction so you slide around the island, and the first two Design A Sprite winners are in: Onigiri applies Overdrive after you eat or drink a consumable, and X-Ray periodically marks nearby enemies. Duplicate Sprites now feed XP to the copy you own, a new Mastery track hands out rewards and Gizmos, and a mastered Sprite costs half as much to resummon. Match Overrides, the mid-match rule twists we covered when the Override season launched, now include Big Head Mode, Prop Hunt (crouch and stay still to become a prop) and Action Hero (aim mid-air to enter Hangtime and deal extra damage). Sharpshooter, which boosts accuracy and cuts recoil, is scheduled for the following Thursday.

Dates for this weekend, and our take

Power Hours run this Saturday, September 5, from 2 PM to 4 PM ET and again from 9 PM to 11 PM ET. During those windows Cheat Master Sprites appear more often, including the new ones, 1-Up Tokens and Portable Extractors can drop from Chests, and everyone lands with one Golden Apple, two Jellyfish and three Peppers. Mastery Mondays return on September 7.

Our take: this is the healthiest kind of Fortnite update. Nothing here is a paid event or a licensed stunt. It is a shotgun rework, a loot system being reined in after players pushed it too far, and a nostalgia season built around the one Chapter 1 gimmick everyone still argues about. Whether you loved or hated the B.R.U.T.E. in 2019, you now have a whole season to relitigate it.
